THE KEY
Even a nest placed in rock is still a shelter, not a guarantee.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two things together: a dwelling can be firm, and a nest can be set in stone. The shelter is real, but it does not put its inhabitant beyond reach; the next line exposes the limit of treating security as certainty.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A strong refuge makes you untouchable.
THE ROOT
מוֹשָׁבְךָ
mōshāvekha
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ב
y-sh-b
to sit, settle, or dwell
“Dwellingplace” sounds like a structure, but its root also carries the act of settling and remaining. The verse presents security as both a place and a settled condition, one that can still be tested.
ALSO GROWS
yāshav: to sit or dwell
יָשַׁב
The verb beneath “dwellingplace” makes habitation an act of settling, not just a structure.
yōshēv: one who sits or dwells; an inhabitant
יוֹשֵׁב
The same root names the person who occupies the dwelling, joining shelter and inhabitant.
mōshāv: dwelling or seat
מוֹשָׁב
This is the form used in the verse: the strong place is where someone settles.
קִנֶּךָ
qinneḵā
GROWS FROM
קנן
q-n-n
to nest or make a nest
The nest is more than a hiding place: its root carries the act of nesting, of establishing a place to live. Here that chosen refuge is set in rock, yet the following line shows that a carefully established shelter has limits.
ALSO GROWS
qēn: a nest
קֵן
This noun names the refuge the Kenite places in the rock.
qinnēn: to nest or build a nest
קִנֵּן
The verb shows the same root as an act of establishing a nest, linking refuge to the act of making it.
THE PATTERN
A shelter’s strength is revealed by what reaches it and what ultimately holds it.
Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.THE THREAD
Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.“Nevertheless” turns the rock-set nest from an image of safety into a shelter with a limit. The dwelling is called strong, yet the line says captivity still reaches its inhabitant.
