This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The root ⁨זנה⁩ (zānāh, “to act sexually unfaithfully”) also carries Scripture’s language of divided allegiance, so bodily desire becomes a turning point in what a people belong to.

Israel (⁨יִשְׂרָאֵל⁩, Yisrāʾēl, “one who contends with God”) is settled at Shittim (⁨שִׁטִּים⁩, Šiṭṭîm, “acacias”) as the people begin to join sexually with the daughters of Moab (⁨מוֹאָב⁩, Môʾāb, “from a father”). The verse speaks now of desire as a bond: a bodily choice can redirect what a person or a people belong to. It holds intimacy and shared allegiance in the same scene.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that sexual desire is sealed off from a person’s or community’s loyalties. Here the body is where belonging begins to shift.

לִזְנוֹת

liznōt

GROWS FROM

זנה

To act sexually unfaithfully; in biblical use, also to turn from covenantal allegiance.

“commit whoredom” in this verse is liznōt. The root keeps the act bodily while also giving it the shape of divided fidelity. English can make “whoredom” sound like a label for conduct; the Hebrew word also lets the reader hear a breach of belonging.

ALSO GROWS

zōnāh: Prostitute; harlot.

זֹנָה

This noun from the same root keeps the language anchored in embodied sexual practice.

vattizneh: And she committed whoredom.

וַתִּזְנֶה

This inflected verb retains the root’s three consonants and shows the same word describing a concrete act.

וַיֵּשֶׁב

vayyēshev

GROWS FROM

ישב

To sit, remain, or dwell.

“abode” in this verse is vayyēshev. The verse begins with settling in a place, then moves to the people’s sexual turning. Dwelling and attachment meet in the passage: where the people abide and whom they join both shape their belonging.

ALSO GROWS

yōshēv: One who sits or dwells; an inhabitant.

יֹשֵׁב

The participle makes dwelling a continuing state, echoing the verse’s opening image of Israel settled in a place.

yeshīvāh: Sitting or remaining; a session.

יְשִׁיבָה

This noun carries the same root consonants into the act of staying, extending the verse’s language of settled presence.

Bodily union can express and redirect a person’s or a people’s allegiance because joining is also a form of belonging.

The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.
Hosea 1:2 · KJVSexual unfaithfulness names the land’s departure from the LORD, joining bodily language to divided allegiance.
Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
Psalm 106:39 · KJVThe same image connects a people’s actions with the loyalties those actions enact.
What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
1 Corinthians 6:16 · KJVBodily joining is described as becoming one body, making intimacy a form of shared identity.
The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.
Hosea 1:2 · KJV

Hosea uses the same root ⁨זנה⁩ (zānāh, “to act sexually unfaithfully”) and places the land’s departure from the LORD beside it. That shared word lets the bodily joining in Numbers open onto divided fidelity without erasing the body’s place in the verse.
