What Does Numbers 26:4 Mean in the King James?
Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt.

THE KEY
The census begins with a command to lift the head, so being counted means being brought into view within the people.
THE MEANING
The verse places you among a people whose movement is out of constriction and into view. The Hebrew command behind “take the sum” pictures each person’s head being lifted into the whole. The count begins at twenty years old and upward.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that being counted means being reduced to a number; here, the count is phrased as lifting each head into view.
THE ROOT
שְׂאוּ
se’u
GROWS FROM
נשא
to lift, carry, or bear
The Hebrew says “lift the head” where English says “take the sum.” Counting is pictured as bringing each person into view within the whole, not leaving them as an anonymous total.
ALSO GROWS
massa: a burden or load
מַשָּׂא
The same root can describe what is carried; the count gathers those who belong to the people being borne together.
nissa: lifted up or carried aloft
נִשָּׂא
This form makes the upward motion audible in the census command: each head is lifted into recognition.
הַיֹּצְאִים
ha-yotz’im
GROWS FROM
יצא
to go out, come forth, or emerge
“went forth” in this verse is ha-yotz’im. The people are identified as those who go out: their movement from מִצְרַיִם (Mitzrayim, Egypt, the constricted place) remains part of who they are. The census holds that emergence in view as it counts them.
ALSO GROWS
yetzi’ah: going out or departure
יְצִיאָה
The noun names the movement that still identifies the counted people.
hotsi: to bring out
הוֹצִיא
This causative form shows the same root from the other side: someone is brought out of the constricted place.
THE PATTERN
The movement out of bondage opens into freedom and a newly named life.
And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.THE THREAD
And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.Numbers calls the people הַיֹּצְאִים (ha-yotz’im, those going out), from יצא (yatsa, go out); Exodus uses that same root for the LORD bringing them out. The census carries the Exodus inside each person counted: the people remain named by the movement that opened their way.
