What Does Numbers 27:7 Mean in the King James?
The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The daughters’ claim is called right, and their father’s inheritance passes through them instead of disappearing with the line everyone expected.
THE MEANING
A voice can name a place in the inheritance that the expected arrangement leaves unseen. The daughters’ claim is called right, then their father’s portion passes into their hands. Recognition becomes material: they receive a possession, and the family share continues through them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a father’s portion must disappear when there is no son to receive it.
THE ROOT
נַחֲלָה
nachalah
GROWS FROM
נחל
to inherit or take possession
The word holds inheritance as an allotted possession, something that comes into someone’s keeping. Here, that share passes into the daughters’ hands, keeping their father’s portion from disappearing from the family line.
ALSO GROWS
nachal: to inherit, take possession
נָחַל
The verb names the receiving that turns an inheritance into someone’s share.
nachalah: inheritance, allotted possession
נַחֲלָה
This is the word used for the portion the daughters receive.
דֹּבְרֹת
dovrot
GROWS FROM
דבר
to speak; word or matter
“speak” in this verse is dovrot. The same root can name speech and a matter or thing. The daughters’ words are treated as a matter with consequences: the verse calls them right and directs an actual transfer.
ALSO GROWS
davar: word, matter, thing
דָּבָר
The daughters’ speech becomes a matter that changes who receives the inheritance.
dibber: to speak, declare
דִּבֵּר
This verbal branch names the act their claim performs in the verse.
נָתוֹן תִּתֵּן
nathon titten
GROWS FROM
נתן
to give, set, place
“give” in this verse is nathon titten. The emphatic form nathon titten makes the giving decisive. The daughters’ words do not remain validated in principle: a possession is actually placed in their hands.
ALSO GROWS
natan: to give, set, place
נָתַן
The verse uses this root to direct the transfer of a possession to the daughters.
mattanah: gift
מַתָּנָה
This branch shows the same root in something given and received.
THE PATTERN
An inheritance takes form when those recognized as heirs are given an actual share.
And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.THE THREAD
And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.“Inheritance” in both verses is נַחֲלָה (nachalah), an allotted possession. Ezekiel extends that share to resident strangers; the shared root reveals inheritance passing to people outside the line others might expect.
