What Does Numbers 31:50 Mean in the King James?
We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.

THE KEY
The Hebrew says they “brought an offering” with the same root of drawing near in both words: the offering is nearness made tangible.
THE MEANING
This verse places tangible possessions before the LORD as covering for the whole living self. The Hebrew נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּ (nafshotenu, our living selves) names the person in the fullness of life, not a detachable inner part. What is brought near and what needs covering meet in the same scene.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that material life and inner life stand apart: here tangible possessions are brought into a scene concerned with the living self before God.
THE ROOT
הִקְרַבְנוּ
hiqravnu
GROWS FROM
קרב
Draw near; approach.
“brought / oblation” in this verse is hiqravnu. The words translated “brought” and “oblation” share the root of drawing near. English separates an action from an object, while Hebrew ties the offering to an act of approach: what is brought is nearness made tangible.
ALSO GROWS
qorban: Offering; something brought near.
קָרְבָּן
The offering’s name carries the movement of approach within it.
qarov: Near.
קָרוֹב
This branch makes the shared root’s central idea explicit: closeness.
qerev: Inward part; midst.
קֶרֶב
The same consonants connect nearness with what is within or at the center.
לְכַפֵּר
lekapper
GROWS FROM
כפר
Cover; make a covering.
“atonement” in this verse is lekapper. The verse names covering as the purpose of what is brought before the LORD. It joins the tangible offering to נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּ (nafshotenu, our living selves), so the covering concerns the whole person in the LORD’s presence.
ALSO GROWS
kippur: Covering; atonement.
כִּפּוּר
It preserves the verse’s image of covering beneath the familiar English rendering.
kaporet: The cover of the ark.
כַּפֹּרֶת
This related word names a literal cover, giving the root’s covering sense a concrete form.
THE PATTERN
Nearness to God is joined with covering or cleansing for the whole living person.
And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.THE THREAD
And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.Numbers and Exodus use the same covering verb, כפר (kaphar, cover), and the same living-self word, נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, living soul). Exodus makes the material dimension explicit as atonement money, opening the connection between tangible things brought near and covering for the whole person before the LORD.
