THE KEY
What is carried is first covered, so concealment becomes part of how the sacred is moved.
THE MEANING
The lampstand and all its vessels are gathered beneath a covering before they are placed on a carrying bar. The covering stays with what is moved, protecting it while its contents remain out of view. The verse holds covering and movement together: what is carried can remain covered through the passage.
THE ROOT
מִכְסֵה
mikhseh
GROWS FROM
כסה
to cover, conceal, keep from view
The word for the covering carries the same root as the action of covering: מִכְסֵה (mikhseh) grows from כסה. The Hebrew foregrounds what the hide does, the whole object is kept covered before it is borne.
ALSO GROWS
kasah: to cover
כָּסָה
This verb makes the action inside מִכְסֵה explicit: the vessels are placed where they will be covered.
mekhusseh: covered
מְכֻסֶּה
This form describes the state the vessels enter before they are carried.
וְנָתְנוּ
venatnu
GROWS FROM
נתן
to give, set, place
“put” in this verse is venatnu. The same verb appears for placing the vessels inside the covering and placing them on the bar. Both steps are deliberate acts of setting: first into protection, then into movement.
ALSO GROWS
natan: to give, set, place
נָתַן
This form carries the range of the verse’s repeated action: the object is set within the covering and set upon the bar.
netinah: giving, placing
נְתִינָה
This noun preserves the same נתן root and emphasizes placement as an intentional act.
THE PATTERN
Covering protects what is carried or keeps what is exposed from remaining in open view.
And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.A Psalm of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.THE THREAD
A Psalm of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. The same כסה root appears in “whose sin is covered,” joining the wrapped vessel to what is no longer left exposed. The shared root shows covering as both physical protection and the concealment of transgression.
