This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Where English says “take the sum,” the Hebrew says “lift the head”: being counted brings each person into view.

The verse speaks of a whole gathered without flattening its members: the sons of Gershon are named within their fathers’ houses and families. Each group remains distinct while belonging to the larger whole.

נָשֹׂא אֶת־רֹאשׁ

nāśōʾ ʾet-rōʾsh

GROWS FROM

נשא

To lift, carry, or bear.

“sum” in this verse is nāśōʾ ʾet-rōʾsh. The Hebrew expression behind the count is literally “lift the head.” The same root appears in nāśîʾ, a leader or chief, and maśśāʾ, a load or burden; here it brings the sons up into view as a distinct part of the whole.

ALSO GROWS

nāśîʾ: Leader, chief, or prince; one raised to that place.

נָשִׂיא

The root’s sense of lifting gives the counted group a place in view, rather than leaving it as an anonymous total.

maśśāʾ: A load or burden; something borne.

מַשָּׂא

The same root can describe what is carried, linking the act of counting with the people and their place within the whole.

Scripture presents counting as attention that keeps each member particular within the whole.

Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;
Numbers 1:2 · KJVThe count is made through families and fathers’ houses, preserving each group’s place within the congregation.
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Psalm 147:4 · KJVThe stars are both counted and called by name, joining the scale of the whole with the particular.
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Luke 12:7 · KJVThe numbered hairs make attention concrete down to the smallest detail.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Psalm 24:7 · KJV

Numbers uses nāśāʾ with “head” in the phrase translated “take the sum”; Psalm 24 uses the same root to say “lift up your heads.” The shared wording lets counting read as bringing into view.
