This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The word translated “offered” means “brought near,” so the gift is already an act of approach.

Even the names carry meaning: Abidan (⁨אֲבִידָן⁩, Abidan, “my father is judge”) is the son of Gideoni (⁨גִּדְעֹנִי⁩, Gideoni, “of Gideon”), and Benjamin (⁨בִּנְיָמִין⁩, Binyamin, “son of the right hand”) names the tribe. At the center, “offered” is the movement of bringing near; giver and gift meet in one act of approach. The verse speaks now wherever what comes forward is also a movement into nearness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It loosens the belief that an offering is only something transferred away: the word also names the movement of coming near.

הִקְרִיב

hiqriv

GROWS FROM

קרב

The root qarab (⁨קָרַב⁩) means to come near or approach.

The Hebrew verb rendered “offered” means to bring near. The noun for an offering grows from the same root, binding the gift to the giver’s movement of approach.

ALSO GROWS

qorban: Offering; a thing brought near.

קָרְבָּן

The noun for an offering shares the root of the action here, so offering carries the sense of approach within it.

qarov: Near; close.

קָרוֹב

This branch makes the root’s nearness plain: the offering belongs to the language of drawing close.

nasi

GROWS FROM

נשא

The root nasa means to lift, carry, or bear.

Nasi, the title translated “prince,” comes from the root nasa, to lift or carry. The title can hold both being raised up and bearing responsibility; here that role is expressed through an act of approach.

ALSO GROWS

nasa: Lift, carry, or bear.

נָשָׂא

This verb gives the title its image of one raised up or carrying responsibility.

massa: Burden or load.

מַשָּׂא

This noun shares the root’s carrying sense, allowing responsibility to sit beneath the prince’s rank.

Approach is the movement through which what is brought near can open into dwelling and closeness.

And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.
Exodus 24:2 · KJVThe same Hebrew root for nearness marks who comes near and who remains outside, making approach a concrete movement with a boundary.
Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
Psalm 65:4 · KJVApproach leads into dwelling; nearness becomes a place of staying and satisfaction.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10:22 · KJVThe same movement of drawing near appears as a present approach involving the whole person.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.
Leviticus 1:2 · KJV

The verb behind “offered” and the noun “offering” here grow from ⁨קרב⁩ (qarab, “come near”). Leviticus makes their shared seed visible: what is offered is something brought near.
