King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse pairs covering with cleansing: Aaron’s act of covering brings the Levites into cleanness before the LORD.
THE MEANING
Cleansing here reaches the whole person before the LORD: what is worn is washed, and the person is covered so they can be clean. Readiness is received through that cleansing, not claimed as a state untouched by need.
THE ROOT
וַיְכַפֵּר
wayḵappēr
GROWS FROM
כפר
Cover; make a covering.
The Hebrew verb translated “made an atonement” comes from kaphar, “cover.” The verse places that covering beside cleansing in the same action, so the covering is part of how the Levites are brought to cleanness.
ALSO GROWS
kappōret: Cover of the ark; often rendered “mercy seat.”
כַּפֹּרֶת
This is another form from כפר, giving the root’s image of a covering a concrete place in the sanctuary.
kōfer: Covering price or ransom.
כֹּפֶר
This branch shows the root’s covering language can also describe a payment that answers a claim, adding depth to Aaron’s act on behalf of the Levites.
וַיִּתְחַטְּאוּ
wayyiṯḥaṭṭəʾû
GROWS FROM
חטא
Miss, err; the root associated with missing and sin.
The Hebrew verb for “were purified” is formed from the same root as חֵטְא, “missing.” In this form, that root describes purification, linking cleanness with the addressing of what has gone wrong.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēṭʾ: Missing, error, sin.
חֵטְא
This familiar branch makes the link between purification and what needs to be addressed visible in the verse’s Hebrew.
ḥaṭṭāʾt: Sin; also a purification offering.
חַטָּאת
The same root can name both the missing and an offering associated with purification, echoing the verse’s movement from purification to offering and covering.
THE PATTERN
Across Scripture, purification is pictured as washing that makes a person clean before God.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.THE THREAD
For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.The Hebrew again places kaphar, “cover,” beside cleansing: the priest covers the people so they may be clean before the LORD. That pairing opens Numbers 8:21 further, where Aaron’s covering and the Levites’ purification belong to one movement.
