And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept the charge of the LORD, and journeyed not.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
When the cloud stays, keeping the watch is itself the journey.
THE MEANING
When the cloud remains, waiting has shape: the people stay attentive to the LORD’s charge. Their pause is not emptiness; keeping continues even while the journey does not.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that faithfulness always looks like visible progress: a pause can itself be the form of keeping the charge.
THE ROOT
שָׁמְרוּ
shamru
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
sh-m-r
To keep, guard, or watch over.
“kept the charge” in this verse is shamru. Hebrew repeats the root: shamru means “they guarded,” and mishmeret means “the watch” or “charge.” Their staying is itself an act of guarding what is entrusted while the cloud remains.
ALSO GROWS
mishmeret: Guard, watch, charge, or duty.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This is the “charge” they keep: the verse names both the watch and their guarding of it with the same root.
shomer: Keeper or watchman.
שֹׁמֵר
The people’s stillness carries the attention of a watchman, not the emptiness of inactivity.
mishmar: Guard, watch, or custody.
מִשְׁמָר
This branch gives their waiting the sense of keeping watch over what has been entrusted.
THE PATTERN
What is entrusted is kept through watchful presence, whether the keeper is human or God.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.THE THREAD
At the commandment of the LORD they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed: they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. The same Hebrew root holds whether the people rest in their tents or journey: they guard the charge in both states. Their pace changes, while the keeping continues.
