What Does Philippians 2:25 Mean in the King James?
Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The sent representative carries the community’s care in his own person: he is brother, co-worker, fellow-soldier, and servant to another’s need.
THE MEANING
Epaphroditus stands before you in several bonds at once: kin, worker, fellow-soldier, the Philippians’ envoy, and the one whose service meets a real need. Community care crosses distance through him; it arrives as a person and as labor. The verse makes belonging tangible in work that reaches another’s need.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that a messenger is only a function dissolves here: the one sent is also named as brother, co-worker, and fellow-soldier, and his service meets a concrete need.
THE ROOT
ἀπόστολον
apostolon
GROWS FROM
ἀποστέλλω
apostellō
To send out or dispatch; ἀπόστολος names one sent as an envoy.
“messenger” in this verse is apostolon. The Greek word points to a sent representative, not simply someone carrying information. “Your” keeps the sending community present in the one sent, whose other names here are brother, co-worker, and fellow-soldier.
ALSO GROWS
apostellō: Send out, dispatch
ἀποστέλλω
It reveals the sending action beneath the word for messenger.
apostolē: Sending, commission
ἀποστολή
It shows that the messenger’s role is bound to being sent on another’s behalf.
συνεργόν
synergon
GROWS FROM
ἔργον (ergon), with σύν (syn-)
Ἔργον means work or task; σύν means together with, so συνεργός names one who works alongside.
“companion in labour” in this verse is synergon. The Greek word names an identity as co-worker, while “fellow-soldier” echoes the same σύν- (“with”) beginning. Shared effort runs through both the work and the struggle in this verse.
ALSO GROWS
synergeō: Work together, cooperate
συνεργέω
The shared-work idea is active in the partnership described here.
ergazomai: Work, labor
ἐργάζομαι
It carries the same work-root beneath the co-worker’s role.
λειτουργόν
leitourgon
GROWS FROM
ἔργον (ergon) within λειτουργός (leitourgos)
Ἔργον means work; λειτουργός joins work with service performed for others or the public.
“ministered” in this verse is leitourgon. The Greek word presents service as work, and the verse directs that work to a concrete need. Care is not abstract here: it reaches another person through what Epaphroditus does.
ALSO GROWS
leitourgia: Service, public service
λειτουργία
It names the service carried out for another’s need.
leitourgeō: Serve, perform service
λειτουργέω
It makes the minister’s role an active work of service.
THE PATTERN
A community’s work and care move through people who belong to one another, so sending and service remain shared.
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:THE THREAD
Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. The same Greek word ἀπόστολος (apostolos, a sent representative) appears here as “messengers” and in Philippians as “your messenger.” In both verses, the person sent represents a community, carrying its care and presence with him.
