What Does Philippians 3:5 Mean in the King James?
Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

THE KEY
What reads like a résumé is a map of identity, marked in the body, inherited through kinship, and shaped by instruction.
THE MEANING
This verse holds identity in layers: a covenant mark received on the eighth day, descent from Israel, Benjaminite belonging, Hebrew inheritance, and a life oriented around instruction. For the reader now, it shows how a self is carried by what arrives through body and kinship as well as by a practiced religious path. Each layer has its own weight, and the list lets them be seen together.
THE ROOT
γένους
genous
GROWS FROM
γεν
γεν (gen): birth, descent, family, or kind.
The KJV’s “stock” can sound like a static pedigree; this word family also names birth, kind, and offspring. The verse places the speaker inside a living line of descent, and Acts uses the same family word for humanity’s shared origin.
ALSO GROWS
genesis: origin, birth
γένεσις
It shares the γεν seed and makes the root’s sense of coming into being visible within a word family about descent.
genea: generation, people of a generation
γενεά
It carries the same birth-and-lineage root into the generations through which belonging is received.
genos: kind, family, offspring
γένος
This is the form behind the verse’s genitive γένους and the same word used for “offspring” in Acts 17:28.
περιτομῇ
peritomēi
GROWS FROM
τεμ-/τομ-
τεμ-/τομ- (tem-/tom-): cut, divide.
“circumcised” in this verse is peritomēi. The word carries a physical sign received on day eight, before the marked child can claim it as an achievement. Its cut both distinguishes and locates the body within a people.
ALSO GROWS
temnō: to cut
τέμνω
It shares the τεμ-/τομ- consonantal family and makes the physical action inside “circumcised” plain.
tomē: cutting, incision
τομή
It shares the same tau-mu stem and names the cut as a bodily mark.
עִבְרִי
ʿivrî
GROWS FROM
עבר
עבר (ʿavar): cross over, pass beyond.
The Greek verse uses Ἑβραῖος (Hebraios, Hebrew); its Hebrew counterpart עִבְרִי (ʿivrî, Hebrew person) is commonly linked to עבר (ʿavar, cross over). That word family gives the inherited people-name an inner motion: belonging is voiced as coming from across or beyond.
ALSO GROWS
ʿavar: to cross over, pass
עָבַר
It shares the root’s ע-ב-ר consonants and gives the Hebrew people-name a sense of crossing.
ʿever: beyond, across, the other side
עֵבֶר
It shares the same consonants and carries the spatial sense of what lies across.
maʿavar: crossing, passage
מַעֲבָר
It grows from the same root and turns crossing into a passage, adding motion to the verse’s inherited identity.
THE PATTERN
Scripture names belonging through embodied signs and inherited kinship, then carries those lineages into wider claims of shared origin.
And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.THE THREAD
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. The word rendered “stock” in Philippians and “offspring” in Acts comes from the same Greek word family: γένος (genos, family or offspring). Philippians names a particular descent, while Acts widens that same language to shared human origin.
