This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Discernment does more than recognize wisdom: it gives wisdom a place to rest.

Wisdom settles in a heart able to discern. In the midst of fools, what is there becomes known; what is present does not stay unseen.

תָּנוּחַ

tānūaḥ

GROWS FROM

נוח

To settle down, come to rest, or remain in a place.

“resteth” in this verse is tānūaḥ. The verb describes wisdom settling in the heart, not merely passing through it. Its root also forms words for letting something rest and for a resting place, so the discerning heart becomes a place wisdom can inhabit.

ALSO GROWS

hēnīaḥ: Let rest; lay down.

הֵנִיחַ

This causative form carries the sense of giving something rest, echoing the heart’s capacity to receive wisdom as a settled presence.

menūḥāh: Resting place; repose.

מְנוּחָה

The same root names a place of rest, illuminating the heart as wisdom’s dwelling rather than a momentary stop.

נָבוֹן

nāvōn

GROWS FROM

בין

To understand, discern, or distinguish.

The root is also used in the word for “between,” linking understanding with the ability to perceive distinctions. Wisdom rests where the heart can tell things apart, not where everything is blurred together.

ALSO GROWS

bīnāh: Understanding; discernment.

בִּינָה

This noun makes explicit the capacity named by navon: perceiving what is before the heart.

bēn: Between; among.

בֵּין

The shared consonants connect understanding with seeing the distinctions between things.

תִּוָּדֵעַ

tivvādēaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

To know, recognize, or perceive.

“is made known” in this verse is tivvādēaʿ. The verse ends with wisdom becoming known or recognized. The Hebrew word family includes both knowing and knowledge, so what is in the midst of fools comes into perception rather than remaining hidden.

ALSO GROWS

yādaʿ: Know; recognize; perceive.

יָדַע

This is the root verb behind “is made known,” connecting the verse’s ending to recognition.

daʿat: Knowledge.

דַּעַת

This related noun shows the same root moving from knowing to what is known.

Wisdom can settle inwardly, while what fills a heart eventually becomes visible.

A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
Proverbs 12:23 · KJVThe discerning person can hold knowledge quietly, while what fills a fool’s heart becomes public.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Luke 6:45 · KJVWhat is held within the heart eventually appears in what comes out.
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
Isaiah 11:2 · KJV

Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root ⁨נוח⁩ (nuach, “rest”) for wisdom and understanding resting upon him. Proverbs locates that resting wisdom in the discerning heart, showing wisdom as something that can dwell within.
