What Does Proverbs 16:30 Mean in the King James?
He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse calls hidden intent an action already underway: the eyes conceal the plan, the lips set it in motion, and the crooked design reaches completion.
THE MEANING
When intent turns toward harm, it does not remain private: thought takes shape in a signal, then reaches completion. The closed eyes and moving lips reveal a coordinated concealment, where the mind plots and the mouth gives the plot a path.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that harm begins only when it becomes visible: the concealed plan is already part of the harm taking shape.
THE ROOT
תַּהְפֻּכוֹת
tahpukhot
GROWS FROM
הפך
Turn, overturn, or transform.
“froward things” in this verse is tahpukhot. The word for what is froward grows from the root for turning things over. The verse presents crookedness as a deliberate turning of things from their proper course, not merely as a vague quality.
ALSO GROWS
haphak: To turn or overturn.
הָפַךְ
The root makes the distortion in the plan visible: something is being deliberately turned askew.
mahpekhah: Overthrow or destruction.
מַהְפֵּכָה
This branch shows how a turning can culminate in upheaval, echoing the harm the verse says the plan brings about.
tahpukhah: A perverse or crooked thing.
תַּהְפֻּכָה
This related form names the distortion itself, connecting the plotted thought to the turned condition it produces.
לַחְשֹׁב
lachshov
GROWS FROM
חשב
Think, reckon, or calculate.
The verse’s plotting is not a passing thought: the root also carries the sense of reckoning and calculation. English can make “devise” sound like mere thinking, while the Hebrew suggests a plan being worked out.
ALSO GROWS
machashavah: Thought, plan, or intention.
מַחֲשָׁבָה
This branch shows the inward plan that the verse describes as aimed toward crookedness.
cheshbon: Account, calculation, or reckoning.
חֶשְׁבּוֹן
The sense of calculation highlights the deliberate, considered quality of the hidden design.
כִּלָּה
killah
GROWS FROM
כלה
Finish, complete, or bring to an end.
“bringeth evil to pass” in this verse is killah. The phrase describes evil as something brought to completion. The verse traces a movement from concealed calculation to a finished outcome, rather than treating the harm as an isolated moment.
ALSO GROWS
kalah: To be complete or finished.
כָּלָה
This is the root’s basic sense and makes the endpoint in the verse explicit.
kilyon: Consumption or destruction.
כִּלָּיוֹן
This related noun shows how completion can carry the sense of something being consumed or brought to ruin.
THE PATTERN
What is privately cultivated takes form through speech or action and reaches its consequence.
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.THE THREAD
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. Both verses use forms of הָפַךְ (haphak, to turn or overturn) for what is rendered “froward.” Proverbs 6:14 makes the path explicit: the inward turning is plotted and then sown outward as discord.
