THE KEY
The cast looks like chance, but the verse names its final outcome as the LORD’s judgment.
THE MEANING
When an outcome appears to fall by chance, the verse names a deeper authority over its whole decision: the LORD. The visible cast is real, but it is not the final account of what governs the result. What lands in the lap is within God’s judgment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a random-looking outcome has escaped God’s governance.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁפָּטוֹ
mishpato
GROWS FROM
שפט
shaphat
To judge, decide, or govern.
The word rendered “disposing” is מִשְׁפָּטוֹ (mishpato, its judgment or decision), from שפט (shaphat, to judge or decide). The verse places the lot’s entire determination within the language of judgment: its landing is not the whole story of its outcome.
ALSO GROWS
mishpat: Judgment, ruling, or decision.
מִשְׁפָּט
This is the word used for the lot’s “disposing,” revealing that its outcome is framed as a decision.
shofet: Judge.
שֹׁפֵט
The judge is the one who makes or gives a ruling, showing the governing force carried by the root.
shaphat: To judge or decide.
שָׁפַט
The verb behind the ruling connects the lot’s outcome to an act of judgment.
THE PATTERN
A lot may be cast by human hands, while its outcome remains within the LORD’s keeping.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.THE THREAD
And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. The “disposing” of the lot is מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, judgment or decision), from שפט (shaphat, to judge). Psalm 9:8 uses the same root for judging and judgment, extending the lot’s decision into the LORD’s judgment of the world.
