THE KEY
The word translated “train” means to dedicate or initiate, and the child is formed according to his way: the beginning is devoted to the path this child walks.
THE MEANING
Early formation travels with a person into age; what is dedicated along their way becomes a path under their feet. The verse speaks of shaping that meets the child where they are, and whose imprint remains in the adult.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that every child must be pressed into one prescribed route: the verse makes the child’s own way part of how they are formed.
THE ROOT
חֲנֹךְ
ḥănōḵ
GROWS FROM
חנך
to initiate or dedicate
“train up” in this verse is ḥănōḵ. The word for training also carries the sense of dedicating or initiating. That gives the verse the image of a beginning devoted to a child’s way, with an imprint that accompanies them into age.
ALSO GROWS
ḥănîḵāyw: his trained or initiated ones
חֲנִיכָיו
This form describes Abraham’s trained men (Genesis 14:14), showing initiation as the beginning of a formed capacity.
ḥănukkāh: dedication
חֲנֻכָּה
The word for dedication shares the root, revealing the consecrating sense carried within the child’s formation.
דַּרְכּוֹ
darkō
GROWS FROM
דרך
to tread or step
The child’s “way” comes from a root of treading: a way is a course made by steps. The phrase places formation along the route this child walks, rather than describing an abstract rule detached from their life.
ALSO GROWS
dāraḵ: to tread or step
דָּרַךְ
The verb makes the path physical: a way takes shape through the steps that move along it.
midrāḵ: a place trodden, a footprint
מִדְרָךְ
This related word pictures the trace left by steps, echoing how formation leaves a lasting mark along a life’s path.
THE PATTERN
Formation takes root along the way a child lives and carries forward across generations.
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.THE THREAD
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.The “way” here is the same Hebrew word, דֶּרֶךְ (derek), as the child’s way in Proverbs. Deuteronomy places teaching in the movement of daily life; Proverbs shows that formation taking root along the path the child walks.
