What Does Proverbs 24:7 Mean in the King James?
Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Wisdom’s height becomes visible at the gate, where the fool cannot turn what is above him into public speech.
THE MEANING
Wisdom stands beyond the fool’s reach, and the gate is where that distance shows: he does not speak among those gathered there. The verse speaks now wherever understanding must enter shared judgment and become words. Silence in that moment can reveal a distance from wisdom, not its possession.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A closed mouth in a public moment is not always thoughtful restraint; here it marks a gap between wisdom’s height and the ability to speak among others.
THE ROOT
רָמוֹת
rāmôt
GROWS FROM
רוּם
r-w-m
To be high, lifted up, or exalted.
“high” in this verse is rāmôt. The verse pictures wisdom as elevated, not merely difficult information. At the gate, that height is tested in the ability to speak within shared judgment.
ALSO GROWS
rām: High or exalted.
רָם
This adjective carries the same elevation that makes wisdom seem beyond the fool’s reach.
mārôm: Height or heights.
מָרוֹם
This branch makes the verse’s image concrete: wisdom occupies a height from which the fool remains distant.
יִפְתַּח
yiftach
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ch
To open.
“openeth” in this verse is yiftach. The verse uses the root of opening for the mouth that stays closed. Its branches also name openings and doorways, so the failure to speak echoes a failure to enter the shared space of the gate.
ALSO GROWS
petaḥ: An opening, entrance, or doorway.
פֶּתַח
The mouth’s opening echoes the threshold of the gate: the fool does not enter public speech.
pātûaḥ: Open.
פָּתוּחַ
This form makes the contrast plain: the fool’s mouth remains unopened where wisdom could become audible.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom becomes legible when it enters shared life as speech and visible conduct.
She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.THE THREAD
She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. Here Wisdom herself cries at the gates, where Proverbs 24:7 leaves the fool silent. The gate is not beyond Wisdom’s reach; it is where she is already speaking, and the contrast is whether the mouth can open to meet her.
