What Does Proverbs 26:12 Mean in the King James?
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The danger is not foolishness but becoming so sure of your own wisdom that you are harder to reach than a fool.
THE MEANING
You can see a person whose own judgment has become the final court; this leaves less room for hope than obvious foolishness. The verse speaks to you wherever confidence has made self-correction difficult: the issue is not being wise, but treating yourself as the measure of wisdom.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
“My certainty that I am wise proves my judgment is sound.” This verse shows that certainty can close off the very possibility of correction.
THE ROOT
עֵינָיו
ʿênāw
GROWS FROM
עין
ʿ-y-n
Eye; the same Hebrew word also names a spring or source.
“In his own eyes” locates the judgment inside the person’s own perspective. The shared word for eye and spring adds an echo: he draws the verdict about himself from his own source.
ALSO GROWS
ʿayin: Eye; also spring or source.
עַיִן
The verse places the man’s wisdom within his own sight: his perspective is where he certifies himself.
maʿyan: Spring or fountain.
מַעְיָן
This related word for a flowing source echoes the image of a person drawing his judgment from within himself.
חָכָם
ḥākām
GROWS FROM
חכם
ḥ-k-m
To be wise or skillful.
The root names both the wise person and wisdom as a quality. The verse does not reject wisdom; it exposes what happens when a person’s own sight becomes the authority that certifies it.
ALSO GROWS
ḥokhmāh: Wisdom.
חָכְמָה
The related noun shows that the verse concerns how wisdom is held, not whether wisdom itself is good.
ḥākam: To be or become wise.
חָכַם
Wisdom is a capacity, while this verse warns about the self-assessment that can make that capacity unreachable to correction.
THE PATTERN
When a person makes their own judgment the final measure of wisdom, they become resistant to correction.
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.THE THREAD
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. The Hebrew repeats the phrase “wise in your own eyes,” joining חָכָם (ḥākām, wise) with עֵינַיִם (ʿênayim, eyes). Proverbs 3:7 makes explicit what the present verse reveals through its comparison: self-certified wisdom leaves less room for hope.
