What Does Proverbs 26:23 Mean in the King James?
Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

THE KEY
Fiery speech can be a silver-like coating over a heart that remains corrupt.
THE MEANING
A vivid, polished voice can sit over an evil heart, just as silver dross can cover an earthen vessel. The coating changes what is visible without changing what lies beneath it. The verse speaks whenever persuasive words seem to prove an inner goodness they cannot guarantee.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that fervor proves sincerity: burning words can come from a wicked heart.
THE ROOT
מְצֻפֶּה
metsuppeh
GROWS FROM
צפה
To overlay or coat; the same consonants also appear in a word for watching or looking out.
“covered” in this verse is metsuppeh. The verse’s covering is a layer laid over the vessel, not a change to the vessel itself. The same consonants can also name a watcher: what appears to the eye is the coating, while the earthen body remains underneath.
ALSO GROWS
tsippah: He overlaid or plated.
צִפָּה
A verb form from this root makes the covering an action applied to the vessel.
tsippui: A coating or overlay.
צִפּוּי
This noun names the layer itself, the visible surface that can conceal what it covers.
tsopheh: A watcher, one who looks out.
צֹפֶה
It shares the consonants in the watch sense; the watcher sees the coating before the earthen vessel beneath it.
דֹּלְקִים
dolqim
GROWS FROM
דלק
To burn or kindle; in another attested sense, to pursue.
“burning” in this verse is dolqim. English gives this word the sense of heat alone, while its root also carries pursuit. The lips can therefore feel pressing and consuming, as well as fiery.
ALSO GROWS
dalaq: To burn, kindle, or pursue.
דָּלַק
The root verb holds both burning and pursuit in the same consonantal family.
doleq: Burning or ablaze.
דֹּלֵק
This participle names the ongoing heat expressed by the lips.
vatidloq: She pursued.
וַתִּדְלֹק
This form uses the same root for pursuit, adding the sense of movement after a target.
כֶּסֶף
kesef
GROWS FROM
כסף
Silver; the same consonantal family also expresses longing or yearning.
The coating takes its appearance from silver, while the verse calls it dross. The consonants also echo longing, but the image separates what attracts the eye from the worth of what is actually there.
ALSO GROWS
kesef: Silver or money.
כֶּסֶף
This is the verse’s silver-like material, though here it is dross coating an earthen vessel.
kasaf: To long for or yearn.
כָּסַף
The shared consonants link silver with longing, an echo of how an attractive surface can draw desire.
nikhsaf: Yearned or longed for.
נִכְסַף
This form carries the same consonants into a word for longing.
THE PATTERN
Visible polish can conceal an inward condition, while a person’s words still flow from the heart beneath it.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.THE THREAD
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;The Hebrew word for lips, שְׂפָתַיִם (sefatayim), shares the root שפה (safah) with the phrase “with his lips” in the next verse. That verse names the concealment directly: hatred hides behind the spoken surface while deceit is stored within.
