This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The danger is not merely that fire exists, but that what you deliberately draw into your embrace leaves its mark on what surrounds you.

This question names a limit: what you bring into intimate reach does not keep its effects contained at the point of contact. The fire reaches the clothes as well as the lap; what you draw close leaves a mark on the life around it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a forbidden intimacy can be kept private and consequence-free.

יַחְתֶּה

yaḥteh

GROWS FROM

חתה

To scoop up or gather live coals.

“take” in this verse is yaḥteh. The verb pictures actively taking up embers, not merely being near a fire. The verse’s question turns on carrying that gathered heat into the lap, where its effects cannot remain distant.

ALSO GROWS

maḥtāh: Firepan or censer.

מַחְתָּה

The same root names a vessel for carrying fire, making the act of taking and bearing embers concrete.

ḥōteh: Heaping or gathering coals, as in Proverbs 25:22.

חֹתֶה

This related form shows the same deliberate gathering of coals; here, the question is what happens when they are carried against the body.

תִּשָּׂרַפְנָה

tissārapnāh

GROWS FROM

שרף

To burn or consume by fire.

“burned” in this verse is tissārapnāh. The verb belongs to the same root that names the seraphim, the “burning ones.” The garment’s burning makes the fire’s consequence visible beyond the place where it is held.

ALSO GROWS

śərāfīm: Seraphim, “burning ones” or fiery ones.

שְׂרָפִים

The same root names beings by their fiery nature, giving the verse’s burning the sense of an active force.

śərēfāh: A burning or consumption by fire.

שְׂרֵפָה

This noun form keeps the focus on burning as an event that takes hold and spreads its effect.

What a person draws close or sets in motion carries consequences beyond the point of contact.

For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
Hosea 8:7 · KJVWhat is set in motion returns as an outcome larger and more consuming than its beginning.
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
James 3:6 · KJVA fire brought into one part of life reaches outward and affects the whole.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Galatians 6:7 · KJVThe consequence remains joined to the action that was planted.
And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
Isaiah 30:14 · KJV

The phrase “to take fire” uses the same root, ⁨חתה⁩, for scooping embers from a hearth. Proverbs places that same act in the lap, where the fire’s effect reaches beyond the spot where it is carried.
