This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The ransom is a covering, and this verse says no amount of covering can compel the injured person to accept it.

When betrayal stirs jealousy, the injured person may refuse every ransom, and even multiplied bribes do not make him willing. Payment cannot compel acceptance or make the rupture whole.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A large enough payment can make the injured person accept what happened.

כֹּפֶר

kofer

GROWS FROM

כפר

Cover or cover over; make a covering.

The word for ransom carries the image of a covering. The verse pictures a payment offered to cover the breach, then says it cannot cover this anger or secure acceptance.

ALSO GROWS

kaphar: Cover, cover over.

כָּפַר

This verbal form makes visible the covering held inside the word for ransom.

kapporet: Cover or lid of the ark.

כַּפֹּרֶת

The same root names a physical cover, giving the covering image a concrete form.

kippurim: Coverings.

כִּפֻּרִים

This form carries the same root into the language of covering a breach, while the verse shows that some breaches resist a price.

יִשָּׂא פְּנֵי

yissa pene

GROWS FROM

נשא

Lift, carry, or bear.

The Hebrew phrase literally says to lift the face, an image of showing favor or acceptance. English gives the result as regard; the Hebrew keeps the gesture that no offered ransom can secure.

ALSO GROWS

nesi'at panim: Lifting of the face; showing favor.

נְשִׂיאַת פָּנִים

This phrase preserves the image behind regard: lifting a face expresses acceptance or favor.

nasi: Prince or chief; one raised up.

נָשִׂיא

This branch keeps the root’s sense of lifting in the idea of elevation or rank.

massa: Burden or load; something carried.

מַשָּׂא

The same root also names what is borne, showing how its physical sense of carrying extends into other words.

שֹׁחַד

shochad

GROWS FROM

שחד

Give a present or bribe as an inducement.

The word rendered gifts can also mean a bribe, sharpening the sense of an attempted inducement. The verse says that even when the bribe is increased, it does not make the injured person willing.

ALSO GROWS

shachad: To give a present or bribe.

שָׁחַד

The verbal form names the act behind the proposed gift: trying to turn another person’s response with an inducement.

shochad: Gift, reward, or bribe.

שֹׁחַד

This is the word in the verse, where the offer is not merely generous but intended to sway the injured person.

A price cannot recover what has been lost when the breach has exceeded exchange.

Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
Numbers 35:31 · KJVThe verse refuses a payment as a substitute for a life.
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
Psalm 49:7 · KJVEven a person’s wealth cannot purchase a brother’s release from death.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16:26 · KJVThe whole world still cannot be exchanged for the life that is lost.
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
Psalm 49:7 · KJV

Proverbs uses ⁨כֹּפֶר⁩ (kofer, covering or ransom); the Psalm uses ⁨כָּפְרוֹ⁩ (kofro, his covering or ransom), from the same root. The Psalm widens the image: no one can pay to recover a brother from death, however much the offer might grow.
