This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

In “possessed,” ⁨קָנָנִי⁩ (qanani, acquired or possessed me) carries the root ⁨קנה⁩ (qanah, acquire or possess), placing Wisdom at the head of God’s way before the works are named.

Wisdom is already at the head of God’s way, before the works that fill the reader’s world. The verse presents what is made as following a wisdom that precedes it, so order is not an afterthought to what exists.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that wisdom is only a tool brought in after a problem or project begins: here, Wisdom stands before the works themselves.

קָנָנִי

qanani acquired or

GROWS FROM

קנה

q-n-h

To acquire, obtain, or possess; in some biblical contexts, to create or bring forth.

“possessed” in this verse is qanani acquired or. The verb belongs to the language of acquiring and possessing, while its use here also carries a create or bring-forth sense in some readings. Either way, Wisdom stands before the works, already at the beginning of God’s way.

ALSO GROWS

qoneh: One who acquires or possesses.

קֹנֵה

This same root names God as “the possessor of heaven and earth” in Genesis 14:19, connecting possession with the source and ordering of creation.

miqneh: Livestock or property held as a possession.

מִקְנֶה

The root also names concrete possessions, showing how its language extends from acquiring to what is held.

רֵאשִׁית

reshith beginning or

GROWS FROM

ראשׁ

r-ʾ-sh

Head, top, or first.

The Hebrew word for beginning is linked to “head,” the leading point of something. Beside “way,” it pictures Wisdom at the head of a course, not merely at an early date.

ALSO GROWS

rosh: The head or uppermost part.

רֹאשׁ

This root makes the beginning the “head” of God’s way, giving the phrase a sense of precedence and direction.

reshith: The first part or beginning.

רֵאשִׁית

The same word-family can name the first portion, placing Wisdom at the outset of what follows.

דַּרְכּוֹ

darko his way

GROWS FROM

דרך

d-r-k

To tread or step; by extension, a path or way.

“Way” carries the image of a path made by treading. Wisdom is at the head of God’s course before its works appear, joining direction with action.

ALSO GROWS

darakh: To tread, step, or walk upon.

דָּרַךְ

This verb gives “way” its movement: the path is a course that can be traveled.

derekh: A road, path, or way of proceeding.

דֶּרֶךְ

The noun names the course itself, which the verse places before the works that follow it.

Wisdom is present with God before creation’s works and belongs to the order through which they take shape.

The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
Proverbs 3:19 · KJVWisdom is the means through which the earth is founded and the heavens are established.
O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
Psalm 104:24 · KJVThe many works the reader sees are made in wisdom, linking creation’s visible abundance to the wisdom that precedes it.
Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
Job 28:27 · KJVIn Job’s search for Wisdom, God sees and prepares her; the surrounding verses place this alongside the measured ordering of the world.
The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
Proverbs 3:19 · KJV

Proverbs 8 places Wisdom at the head of God’s way before the works. Proverbs 3 shows what that precedence means: the earth is founded and the heavens established by wisdom.
