What Does Psalm 105:41 Mean in the King James?
He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.

THE KEY
The stone is not the end of the water’s path: when it opens, the river reaches ground that looked unable to carry life.
THE MEANING
A hard place opens, and water is released. It keeps moving across dry ground like a river. The verse speaks now to places that feel sealed or barren: what is released can travel farther than the point where it first opens.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a hard boundary proves there is no provision, or that dry ground must remain beyond the flow’s reach.
THE ROOT
פָּתַח
pataḥ
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
to open, unfasten
“opened” in this verse is pataḥ. The same root names an opening, פֶּתַח (petaḥ), and a key, מַפְתֵּחַ (mafteaḥ): not just a crack, but access. The opening turns what seems like a solid boundary into a passage, and the flow reaches the dry places beyond it.
ALSO GROWS
petaḥ: An opening, entrance, or doorway
פֶּתַח
The opened rock becomes a passage through which the water can reach the dry ground.
mafteaḥ: A key; an instrument that opens
מַפְתֵּחַ
This branch carries the root’s sense of access: what is closed becomes available through an opening.
THE PATTERN
Life-giving provision moves through an opened source into places that cannot produce it on their own.
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.THE THREAD
That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. The same root, פתח (pataḥ, “open”), appears in “thou openest thine hand.” Here, too, opening makes provision available: in Psalm 105 water flows from the opened rock; here creatures are filled from the open hand.
