What Does Psalm 12:5 Mean in the King James?
For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The needy person’s groan becomes the moment the LORD rises to place them in deliverance, beyond the aggressor’s reach.
THE MEANING
The LORD hears the pressure and the groaning that power tries to drown out, and answers by placing the vulnerable in deliverance. The threat does not have the final word over the person who is suffering now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being powerless or unheard means the aggressor is the only force at work.
THE ROOT
בְּיֵשַׁע
bə-yēšaʿ
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-š-ʿ
to deliver, bring out into safety
The verse says the needy person is set בְּיֵשַׁע, “in deliverance,” giving safety the shape of being brought out from what constricts. The same root gives יְשׁוּעָה (yəšūʿāh, deliverance) and מוֹשִׁיעַ (môšîaʿ, deliverer), joining the place of safety with the one who brings someone there.
ALSO GROWS
yəšūʿāh: deliverance
יְשׁוּעָה
It shares the root ישע and names the deliverance into which the LORD places the needy person.
môšîaʿ: deliverer
מוֹשִׁיעַ
It shares the root ישע and names the one who brings a person out into safety.
מֵאַנְקַת
mē-ʾanqat
GROWS FROM
אנק
ʾ-n-q
to groan
The word translated “sighing” comes from a root for groaning under pressure. The verse places that sound beside oppression: the suffering is heard, and the LORD’s arising answers it.
ALSO GROWS
ʾănāqāh: groaning
אֲנָקָה
It shares the consonants אנק and makes explicit the groan carried by the verse’s word for sighing.
ʾānaq: to groan
אָנַק
This verb from the same root shows the needy person’s sigh as an expression of felt pressure.
THE PATTERN
The cry of people under oppression becomes the point where the LORD answers distress with deliverance.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,THE THREAD
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.Psalm 12:5 places the needy person בְּיֵשַׁע, “in deliverance”; Psalm 18:2 uses the same root ישע in “my deliverer” and “my salvation.” The one who rises to place the vulnerable in safety is named here as the deliverer himself.
