What Does Psalm 124:2 Mean in the King James?
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse places the LORD’s being for us beside the force of people rising against us, so opposition is real but never the whole scene.
THE MEANING
When opposition rises against you, this verse names the presence that stands with you as decisive to your survival. The threat is real, but it does not mean you are alone or already overcome.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being opposed means being abandoned.
THE ROOT
הָיָה לָנוּ
hayah lanu
GROWS FROM
היה
H-Y-H
to be, become, happen
“was on our side” in this verse is hayah lanu. The Hebrew says the LORD “was for us” or “was to us”: being itself is pictured in relationship. The verse locates deliverance in the LORD’s presence with us, not in the disappearance of opposition.
ALSO GROWS
ehyeh: I am; I will be
אֶהְיֶה
This first-person form of the same root makes being a living presence, echoing the LORD’s being-for-us.
yehi: let it be
יְהִי
This form of the same root appears in the creation phrase “Let there be light,” showing the root can speak of being brought forth.
קוּם
qum
GROWS FROM
קום
Q-W-M
to rise, stand, arise
“rose up” in this verse is qum. The Hebrew frames the threat as a rising against us. This root can also describe being raised or established, so the human uprising is one force in the scene, not the final word over what stands.
ALSO GROWS
maqom: place, standing place
מָקוֹם
This noun from the same root links rising with a place to stand, sharpening the contrast between those rising against us and the presence that stands for us.
heqim: to raise, establish
הֵקִים
The causative form shows that the same root can mean establishing or raising up, widening the picture beyond hostile uprising.
THE PATTERN
The presence of God beside the threatened person keeps opposition from defining the whole scene.
To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?THE THREAD
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?This verse turns the same assurance into a first-person line: the LORD is on my side while human opposition remains present. It lets you hear “on our side” as a present relationship, not a claim that no one will rise against you.
