What Does Psalm 132:17 Mean in the King James?
There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew word-family behind “horn” also gives a verb for shining with rays, so David’s budding strength is already joined to the image of the lamp.
THE MEANING
The promise presents strength as living growth: the horn of David is made to bud. The lamp for God’s anointed is already prepared, so light does not have to be invented when it is needed. The verse meets you now with growth and light held together, even when only one is visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a season without visible growth proves the promise is finished.
THE ROOT
קֶרֶן
qeren
GROWS FROM
קרן
q-r-n
Projecting outward: the noun names a horn, and a related verb describes rays shining outward.
The horn is not only an image of strength: its Hebrew word-family also names radiance. Beside the lamp, that sound-link lets David’s budding strength carry the image of light as well as power.
ALSO GROWS
qeren: horn; a projecting point
קֶרֶן
The horn images strength as something that projects outward.
qaran: to emit rays; to shine
קָרַן
This verb describes Moses’ face shining in Exodus 34:29, linking the horn’s word-family with the lamp’s radiance.
אַצְמִיחַ
atzmiach
GROWS FROM
צמח
ts-m-ch
To sprout, grow, or put forth a shoot.
The verb means “I cause to sprout,” making the horn itself the image of living growth. The same root names the “Branch” promised to David, so bud and Branch belong to one Hebrew growth-image.
ALSO GROWS
tsamach: to sprout or grow
צָמַח
This is the verb behind “to bud”; here it appears in a form meaning “I cause it to sprout.”
tsemach: a sprout or branch
צֶמַח
Jeremiah 23:5 uses this noun for the Branch promised to David.
דָּוִד
David
GROWS FROM
דוד
d-w-d
Beloved; a loved one.
David’s name carries the sense of “beloved,” giving the promise an intimate dimension alongside its royal imagery. The horn that buds belongs to the beloved one.
ALSO GROWS
dod: beloved; lover
דּוֹד
This root-sibling carries the beloved sense echoed in David’s name.
dodi: my beloved
דּוֹדִי
This form appears in the Song of Songs and makes the root’s intimate sense explicit.
THE PATTERN
The Davidic promise takes the shape of growth that rises into light.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,THE THREAD
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. The Hebrew צֶמַח (tsemach, “Branch”) comes from the same root צמח (ts-m-ch, “sprout, grow”) as “make ... bud” in the psalm. Jeremiah makes explicit what Psalm 132 leaves inside the growth-image: the promise to David itself takes branch-form and rises.
