What Does Psalm 139:11 Mean in the King James?
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

THE KEY
The darkness imagined as a covering becomes the very light that surrounds you.
THE MEANING
When you imagine darkness closing over you, the verse answers with a reversal inside the image: night itself is light around you. No darkness makes you unseen to the One whose presence holds both night and light. The place that feels like concealment remains within that seeing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that darkness can make you unseen or unreachable falls apart here: night itself shines around you, and no hidden place lies outside God’s seeing.
THE ROOT
יְשׁוּפֵנִי
yeshufeni
GROWS FROM
שׁוּף
To strike at, crush, or assail; here, to overwhelm or cover.
“cover” in this verse is yeshufeni. The root’s striking force makes the imagined darkness more than a dim backdrop: it comes at the speaker. Yet the sentence turns that attack inside out, night itself is light around the one who is seen.
ALSO GROWS
yeshufeni: Shall cover or overwhelm me (Psalm 139:11).
יְשׁוּפֵנִי
The darkness is pictured as an active force pressing over the speaker.
teshufennu: You shall bruise or strike him (Genesis 3:15).
תְּשׁוּפֶנּוּ
The same root describes a strike at the heel, giving the darkness’s imagined covering a forceful, attacking quality.
אוֹר
or
GROWS FROM
אוֹר
To shine or be light.
Here light is not merely set against night: the verse makes night itself light around the speaker. The root carries both the radiance and the act of shining, so the image is active as well as surrounding.
ALSO GROWS
he'ir: He caused to shine or gave light.
הֵאִיר
The verb shows the same root as an act of illumination, deepening the sense of night becoming light.
ma'or: Luminary or light-bearer.
מָאוֹר
This branch names a source of light, while the verse presents light as the condition surrounding the speaker.
THE PATTERN
Darkness never creates a place outside God’s presence or seeing.
There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.THE THREAD
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. The next verse repeats the same darkness, night, and light language, showing why the night is light around you: darkness cannot conceal you from God. What feels like covering in verse 11 is, to God, already as visible as day.
