This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

God does more than light the lamp in your hand: the Hebrew says he makes your darkness shine.

The verse holds two acts together: God lights your lamp and makes your darkness bright. The dark is still named, but it is no longer untouched by light.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that God’s light can reach you only after you have escaped the dark; here, the darkness itself is where God brings brightness.

יַגִּיהַ

yaggiah

GROWS FROM

נגה

To shine or beam; in this form, to make bright.

“enlighten” in this verse is yaggiah. The verse uses ⁨יַגִּיהַ⁩ (yaggiah, “he will make shine”) for the darkness itself. Hebrew thus pictures God bringing brightness into the dark, not only lighting something outside it.

ALSO GROWS

nagah: To shine or beam

נָגַהּ

This verbal form names the shining action at the root of the verse’s promise.

nogah: Brightness, radiance

נֹגַהּ

This related noun names the visible brightness that the act of shining brings forth.

תָּאִיר

ta'ir

GROWS FROM

אור

To be light or shine.

The first lighting verb comes from ⁨אָוֹר⁩ (or, “light”), while “enlighten” comes from ⁨נָגַהּ⁩ (nagah, “shine”). The verse moves from lighting the lamp to making the darkness bright, using two roots to hold both images together.

ALSO GROWS

orah: Light, brightness

אוֹרָה

This feminine form shows the same root naming light as a quality or presence.

ma'or: Luminary, light-bearer

מָאוֹר

This branch names a bearer of light, echoing the lamp that is lit in the verse.

God’s light becomes visible within darkness, without requiring the darkness to disappear first.

Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
Psalm 112:4 · KJVLight arises in the darkness itself, echoing the brightness God brings to the speaker’s dark place.
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Micah 7:8 · KJVThe speaker remains in darkness, yet the LORD is present as light there.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 1:5 · KJVLight shines in darkness, holding together its presence and the darkness that surrounds it.
Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
Psalm 112:4 · KJV

Both verses use ⁨אוֹר⁩ (or, “light”) for light. Psalm 112:4 places it “in the darkness,” opening Psalm 18:28’s image of God making the speaker’s darkness bright.
