What Does Psalm 27:8 Mean in the King James?
When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The face being sought is a presence to turn toward, and the heart is already answering that turn.
THE MEANING
The invitation speaks now: “Seek ye my face,” and the heart answers, “Thy face, LORD, will I seek.” The sought face is the LORD’s presence; seeking is a turning toward the one who calls. The heart’s response rises from within.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that seeking God is only an outside command: here the heart answers the call as its own inward response.
THE ROOT
פָּנִים
panim
GROWS FROM
פנה
p-n-h
To turn or turn toward.
The word for face is linked with turning, so “seek my face” holds both presence and direction: turning toward the one who is present. The heart’s answer is already a movement toward that presence.
ALSO GROWS
panah: Turn; turn toward.
פָּנָה
The root makes seeking the face a directional response, not simply a search for information.
panim: Face; presence.
פָּנִים
The sought face is the presence toward which the heart turns.
בַּקְּשׁוּ
baqqĕshū
GROWS FROM
בקש
b-q-sh
To seek or request.
The call and the heart’s answer use the same root: the invitation to seek is met by seeking. This root also carries the sense of making a request, so the response is an address to the one being sought.
ALSO GROWS
baqqashah: Request; petition.
בַּקָּשָׁה
The related word shows that seeking can carry the shape of asking the one addressed.
mevaqqesh: One who seeks; seeker.
מְבַקֵּשׁ
This branch names the person shaped by the repeated act of seeking.
THE PATTERN
A call toward God’s presence finds its answer in wholehearted seeking, and seeking opens into encounter.
Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:THE THREAD
This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah. This verse repeats the roots for seeking and face, then names the seekers as a generation. The heart’s inward answer in Psalm 27:8 becomes a shared identity: those who seek are those turning toward God’s presence.
