This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew root for bringing a plan to nothing is also used for making a covenant void: even a nation’s designs have no guaranteed permanence.

The LORD can bring the plans surrounding you to nothing, even when they gather the force of a people. Agreement, strategy, and apparent inevitability do not make those plans final.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a plan becomes inevitable once enough people agree to it. This verse says collective designs can still be undone.

הֵפִיר

hephir

GROWS FROM

הפר

parar

Break, annul, or frustrate.

“bringeth ... to nought” in this verse is hephir. “Bringeth to nought” carries the force of breaking or annulling, not merely delaying. The same root can describe a covenant made void, giving the verb a sharper edge: a nation’s design has no guaranteed permanence.

ALSO GROWS

disappoint: Frustrate or defeat a plan.

Job 5:12 uses this root for disappointing the devices of the crafty, closely echoing this verse’s pairing of thwarted plans.

make void: Render an agreement ineffective or annul it.

Psalm 89:39 uses the same root for a covenant made void, showing the force behind “bringeth ... to nought.”

מַחְשְׁבוֹת

machshevot

GROWS FROM

חשב

chashav

Think, reckon, devise, or plan.

These “devices” are formed designs, not just passing thoughts. The Hebrew places them beside the nations’ counsel, naming both deliberation and the plans shaped from it.

ALSO GROWS

reckon: Count, consider, or calculate.

This branch shows the planning as a kind of human calculation, however convincing it seems.

devise cunning works: Design or plan something with skill.

The same root can describe skilled design, so the plans here are deliberate constructions of thought, not idle wishes.

עֲצַת

atsat

GROWS FROM

יעץ

ya'ats

Advise, counsel, or plan.

The verse names counsel first and formed devices next. The pair reaches from collective deliberation to the designs people build from it.

ALSO GROWS

counsel: Advice or a plan formed through deliberation.

This is the nations’ shared direction before it becomes a device or scheme.

counsellor: One who advises or gives counsel.

The related word makes the human source of such direction visible: plans gather force through those who shape and advise them.

Collective human designs remain contingent, while what is established by God cannot be overthrown.

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
Job 5:12 · KJVThe same Hebrew root and the same word for “devices” describe plans that cannot reach their intended outcome.
There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Proverbs 19:21 · KJVMany human plans can coexist, yet they do not determine what ultimately stands.
But if it be of God, ye can not overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
Acts 5:39 · KJVThe verse extends the pattern: a design grounded in God cannot be overthrown by human opposition.
Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
Psalm 89:39 · KJV

“Bringeth ... to nought” and “made void” come from the same Hebrew root, ⁨הפר⁩ (parar), with the force of annulment. In Psalm 33 the nations’ counsel is annulled; here the same verb names a covenant made void, showing that the word carries more force than mere delay.
