What Does Psalm 33:3 Mean in the King James?
Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The “new” song is renewal returning as sound, not novelty for novelty’s sake.
THE MEANING
Your song can be renewed from within: the Hebrew word for “new” also carries the sense of making fresh or repairing. The verse joins skilled playing to a teruʿah, a cry or shout, so carefully shaped sound and exuberant volume belong together.
THE ROOT
חָדָשׁ
chadash
GROWS FROM
חדש
To renew, make fresh, or repair.
Chadash can name not only something never heard before, but what is renewed or repaired. The new song can therefore be praise returning as a voice is made fresh.
ALSO GROWS
chadash: To make new or restore.
חָדַשׁ
It opens “new song” to the sense of renewal, not just novelty.
chodesh: A month, named in connection with the renewing moon.
חֹדֶשׁ
It echoes the root’s cycle of returning freshness.
תְּרוּעָה
teruʿah
GROWS FROM
רוע
To raise a shout or cry aloud.
“loud noise” in this verse is teruʿah. English “noise” can sound like undifferentiated volume, but teruʿah is a raised cry or blast. The loudness is expressive: it is an acclamation within the song.
ALSO GROWS
ruaʿ: To cry aloud or raise a shout.
רוּעַ
It shows the action behind the verse’s loud sound.
teruʿah: A shout, cry, or blast.
תְּרוּעָה
It makes the song’s loudness a voiced cry rather than mere volume.
THE PATTERN
A renewed song turns deliverance into audible witness, spreading from one mouth toward many peoples.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;THE THREAD
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.It shares חָדָשׁ (chadash, new or renewed) with “new song.” Here the song is put into a mouth, then others see and trust: renewal becomes audible and moves outward.
