What Does Psalm 40:2 Mean in the King James?
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew joins being lifted out with having your steps made firm: rescue restores movement, not just escape.
THE MEANING
When everything beneath you gives way, this verse names rescue as a whole movement: you are lifted from the pit and placed on ground that holds. The same hand that raises you gives your next steps firmness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that once you are out of the pit, you must find your own footing. Here, the one who lifts you also sets your feet and firms your steps.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעֲלֵנִי
vayyaʿalēnî
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿalah
To go up, rise, or bring upward.
“brought me up” in this verse is vayyaʿalēnî. The verb carries the movement of ascent: the speaker is not only removed from the pit but lifted upward from it. The verse then joins that rising to firm ground and steps that can continue.
ALSO GROWS
ʿăliyyāh: Ascent, going up.
עֲלִיָּה
This branch makes the upward direction explicit: being brought out is also a rising.
ʿōlāh: That which goes up; a burnt offering.
עֹלָה
The same root describes something ascending, echoing the verse’s movement from the pit toward solid ground.
כּוֹנֵן
kônēn
GROWS FROM
כון
kun
To be firm, establish, or prepare.
“established” in this verse is kônēn. The word for establishing the speaker’s goings belongs to a root of firmness and preparation. The rescue reaches beyond a single safe place: it gives the next steps a steady footing.
ALSO GROWS
māḵôn: A fixed place or dwelling place.
מָכוֹן
This branch connects established steps with a place made firm enough to remain in.
hēḵîn: Prepared or made ready.
הֵכִין
The root’s sense of preparation suggests that the path ahead is being made ready as the speaker’s footing is secured.
THE PATTERN
Rescue becomes visible when ground that threatened movement becomes ground that carries it.
But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.THE THREAD
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.The word translated “ordered” comes from the same root, כון (kun), as “established” in this verse. Both join a person’s steps with firmness prepared beneath them.
