What Does Psalm 53:5 Mean in the King James?
There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The ones who make others afraid are seized by a fear with no footing as God breaks their strength at its bones.
THE MEANING
When opposition feels formidable, this verse shows that its threat is not the same as lasting strength: God scatters the bones of the one arrayed against you. Fear overtakes them where no fear was; they are shamed and rejected, and the verse leaves that judgment stark.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that whoever frightens you must therefore be in control; the verse shows their strength collapsing while terror overtakes them.
THE ROOT
פָּחֲדוּ פַחַד
pāḥădû paḥad
GROWS FROM
פחד
p-ḥ-d
To dread or fear; the noun carries the sense of terror or dread.
“great fear” in this verse is pāḥădû paḥad. The Hebrew repeats the same root as verb and noun: literally, “they feared a fear.” Terror becomes an event that seizes them, even as the verse says there was no fear there; the next clause shows the attackers’ strength breaking.
ALSO GROWS
paḥad: Dread, terror; a noun for fear.
פַּחַד
The noun names the terror that the verb repeats in the verse.
pāḥad: To fear, dread.
פָּחַד
The verb presents fear as something happening to them, not as proof that their power is secure.
עַצְמוֹת
ʿaṣmôt
GROWS FROM
ע־צ־ם
ʿ-ṣ-m
To be strong or mighty; עֶצֶם also names a bone, the self, or the substance of a thing.
The verse says God scatters the attackers’ bones: the image reaches the body’s frame, and the word can also name a thing’s substance or self. The same word family carries strength and might, so what is scattered is the structure that seemed to make them formidable.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsem: Bone; also the self or substance of a thing.
עֶצֶם
The verse’s bones can evoke the attackers’ very structure, the substance that holds them together.
ʿāṣûm: Mighty, strong; sometimes numerous.
עָצוּם
This related form holds might in the same word family as the bones God scatters.
THE PATTERN
Opposing strength does not secure its power: God brings the proud and those who strive against others to shame and collapse.
Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.THE THREAD
Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.Proverbs uses the same Hebrew root, פחד (pachad), for “afraid” and “fear.” It pairs sudden terror with the desolation of the wicked, opening Psalm 53’s strange phrase “they feared a fear” as terror arriving while their power is already collapsing.
