What Does Psalm 59:1 Mean in the King James?
To the chief Musician, Al-taschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse asks for more than a shield: to be pulled from the enemy’s grasp and set somewhere beyond its reach.
THE MEANING
The danger is named directly: people rise against you, and you ask God to pull you from their reach and set you in a high refuge. This is a present plea in which the threat remains real, yet it does not define the only possible position.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that being targeted means you must remain within reach; it imagines removal from danger and a place of refuge.
THE ROOT
הַצִּילֵנִי
hatzileni
GROWS FROM
נצל
Take away or snatch out; in this verb form, rescue or deliver.
“Deliver me” in this verse is hatzileni. The plea carries a movement out of the enemy’s grasp, not only a request for protection while danger remains close. The same root can describe carrying something away, so rescue here has the force of removal.
ALSO GROWS
hitsil: He rescued or delivered.
הִצִּיל
This form makes the removal explicit: the one in danger is taken out of it.
wenitsaltem: You shall carry off or plunder, as in Exodus 3:22.
וְנִצַּלְתֶּם
The same root describes taking something from its former holder, illuminating deliverance as a breaking of the enemy’s hold.
תְּשַׂגְּבֵנִי
tesagveni
GROWS FROM
שגב
Be high, secure, or inaccessible; in this verb form, set on high.
“Defend me” in this verse is tesagveni. “Defend” can sound like merely blocking a blow, but this verb asks to be placed beyond the attackers’ reach. Those rise against you, while God sets you high, a change of position as well as protection.
ALSO GROWS
sagav: To be high, exalted, or secure.
שָׂגַב
The root makes the verse’s defense vertical: safety comes through being set high.
misgav: A high refuge or stronghold.
מִשְׂגָּב
This related noun pictures the refuge as an elevated place, expanding “defend me” into a place beyond the threat’s reach.
THE PATTERN
Scripture depicts deliverance as active removal from danger, sometimes joined to a raised or changed position.
He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;THE THREAD
He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.The Hebrew verb for “delivereth” shares נצל (natsal, rescue or take out) with Psalm 59:1. Then Psalm 18:48 adds “liftest me up above those that rise up against me,” making explicit the change of position carried within “defend me.”
