What Does Psalm 73:17 Mean in the King James?
Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The word translated “end” means what comes after, so the sanctuary opens sight beyond the present moment.
THE MEANING
The reader can be caught measuring life by what appears to prosper now. In God’s sanctuary, the view reaches beyond the visible moment, and the after-state comes into focus. What seems like the whole story is only its present scene.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Present prosperity proves that a life is secure and going well.
THE ROOT
אַחֲרִיתָם
ʾaḥaritam
GROWS FROM
אחר
ʾ-ḥ-r
After, behind, later.
The word for “end” carries the sense of what comes after. The sanctuary brings the hidden after-state into view, changing how the present scene reads.
ALSO GROWS
ʾaḥarit: Latter end, outcome.
אַחֲרִית
It names the outcome that the verse says becomes understandable.
ʾaḥaron: Last, latter.
אַחֲרוֹן
It carries the same “after” sense, showing that an end is what follows.
מִקְדָּשׁ
miqdash
GROWS FROM
קדש
q-d-sh
Set apart.
The sanctuary is named from the root for setting apart. Entering this set-apart place coincides with seeing beyond the measures of the present scene.
ALSO GROWS
qodesh: Set-apartness; what is set apart.
קֹדֶשׁ
It shares the sanctuary’s root and shows the quality carried by the place.
qadosh: Set apart.
קָדוֹשׁ
It is the same root expressed as a quality, linking sanctuary with what is set apart.
THE PATTERN
A present appearance is incomplete until its outcome is seen.
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.THE THREAD
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. Both verses use אַחֲרִית (ʾaḥarit, what comes after) for “end.” Psalm 37:37 shows the outcome of the upright as peace, extending the view beyond whatever the present appears to promise.
