Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

THE KEY
The anger here is not separate from the fire: אַף (af, nose or nostril; also anger) already carries the heat that the fire makes visible.
THE MEANING
This verse meets you with a God whose hearing is not indifference: the response is wrath, named as fire kindled against Jacob and anger rising against Israel. The paired names and images intensify the moment; the anger catches and ascends. Its force stays exposed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being heard does not always mean receiving reassurance or approval; here, hearing is followed by wrath.
THE ROOT
אַף
af
GROWS FROM
אף
Nose or nostril; also anger, the heat of a flared nostril.
English makes “anger” sound abstract, but אַף (af) means nose or nostril and also names anger: the flare is already inside the word. Beside the kindled fire, the root lets you feel this anger as heat, not merely as a detached verdict.
ALSO GROWS
af: Nose, nostril; also anger.
אַף
The same word names both the body part and the anger, joining the verse’s rising heat to its image of fire.
erekh appayim: Slow to flare; literally, long of nostrils.
אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם
This expression measures how slowly anger flares; here, the nostril-heat rises and the verse leaves its force unrestrained.
עָלָה
alah
GROWS FROM
עלה
To go up, rise, ascend.
“came up” in this verse is alah. The verse does not only say anger exists; it says anger rises. The root gives the anger a direction, making it a force that comes up into view.
ALSO GROWS
alah: To rise, go up, ascend.
עָלָה
This is the verb used for the anger that “came up” against Israel.
olah: Ascending offering; burnt offering.
עֹלָה
The noun preserves the root’s upward motion, echoing the ascent of anger in this verse.
THE PATTERN
Divine anger is pictured as heat that rises and fire that becomes visible against the people.
And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;THE THREAD
And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.Numbers 11:1 uses אַף (af, nose or nostril; also anger) for the LORD’s anger and places it beside fire again. The shared root makes the image tangible: anger flares as heat and takes the form of fire.
