What Does Revelation 1:20 Mean in the King James?
The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The mystery is a map of a living assembly: its messengers are stars in the speaker’s hand, and the assembly itself is a lampstand.
THE MEANING
This image speaks now: the messengers are held in the speaker’s right hand, and the assemblies are the lampstands. Each assembly becomes a visible vessel of light, held in a shared form.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The mystery is not meant to remain inaccessible: the verse names what its stars and lampstands signify.
THE ROOT
ἐκκλησιῶν
ekklesiōn
GROWS FROM
καλ-/κλη- (kal-/klē-)
Call, summon; in ἐκκλησία, an assembly.
“churches” in this verse is ekklesiōn. The Greek word names assemblies, the gathered people represented by the lampstands. Its call-and-gathering family lets the image hold a people together as a shared witness.
ALSO GROWS
kaleō: to call, summon
καλέω
Its call-and-summons sense echoes the gathering named by ἐκκλησία.
klēsis: calling, summons
κλῆσις
This related form keeps the sense of a people gathered by a call.
ekklēsia: assembly
ἐκκλησία
This is the singular form behind “churches”: the lampstand represents a gathered people.
ἄγγελοι
angeloi
GROWS FROM
ἀγγελ-
angel-
Message, announcement; a bearer of a message.
“angels” in this verse is angeloi. The Greek names them angeloi, messengers, making their role as bearers of a message part of the image. Their star-like place is joined to a concrete relation: they are held in the speaker’s right hand.
ALSO GROWS
angelos: messenger
ἄγγελος
This is the singular form translated “angel”; the verse identifies the stars as its plural.
angelia: message, report
ἀγγελία
The related word names what a messenger carries.
euangelion: good message
εὐαγγέλιον
This compound carries the same message-family into the word for good news.
λυχνίας
lychnías
GROWS FROM
λυχν-
lychn-
Lamp, a source of light.
“candlesticks” in this verse is lychnías. The word names a stand for a lamp, so the assembly is pictured as what holds light in place. Seven assemblies appear as seven distinct stands, each bearing its own visible light.
ALSO GROWS
lychnos: lamp
λύχνος
The lampstand holds the lamp whose light it makes visible.
lychnia: lampstand
λυχνία
This is the singular form translated “candlestick,” the image the verse applies to an assembly.
THE PATTERN
Scripture pictures gathered people as public light and as a body whose distinct members belong together.
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.THE THREAD
Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;Revelation 1:20 names what the stars and lampstands signify; here the same figure who holds the messengers walks among the assemblies. The image becomes relational: the messengers are held, and the one speaking moves among the assemblies.
