King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The second beast’s authority reaches its aim when the earth bows to the first beast because its deadly wound has been healed.
THE MEANING
This verse shows authority turning recovery into a spectacle of allegiance. The second beast exercises its authority in the first beast’s presence and causes the earth’s inhabitants to bow to the beast whose deadly wound has been healed. The bowing is compelled, so the scene holds force and devotion together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A healed wound is not proof that the power behind it deserves allegiance; here, recovery becomes a means of driving the crowd’s bow.
THE ROOT
ἐθεραπεύθη
etherapeuthē
GROWS FROM
θεραπευ-
therapeu-
To attend to or serve; by extension, to treat or heal.
“was healed” in this verse is etherapeuthē. The first beast’s injury is described with a verb that can mean both attending to someone and healing them. Its deadly wound’s recovery becomes the spectacle through which the second beast directs allegiance toward it.
ALSO GROWS
therapeia: Care or attendance, including medical treatment and healing.
θεραπεία
This related word keeps the sense of attending to an injury alongside the result of healing it.
therapōn: A person who attends or serves another.
θεράπων
This related form echoes the root’s sense of attendance and care within the word family.
προσκυνήσουσιν
proskynēsousin
GROWS FROM
προσκυν- (proskyn-), from προσκυνέω (proskyneō)
To bow down, prostrate oneself, or pay homage.
“worship” in this verse is proskynēsousin. The word carries the posture of bowing, making the allegiance visible in the body. The verse presents that bow as caused by the second beast, so public devotion and coercive power appear together.
ALSO GROWS
proskynēsis: The act of bowing down or paying homage.
προσκύνησις
This noun names the visible act at the center of the verse.
proskynētēs: A person who pays homage through bowing.
προσκυνητής
This form names the person who takes the posture the beast’s authority demands.
ἐξουσίαν
exousian
GROWS FROM
ἐξουσι- (exousi-), from ἐξουσία (exousia)
Authority, right, or jurisdiction to act.
The Greek word can name authority or a right to act, giving “power” a sense of recognized control as well as force. Here that authority is exercised in the first beast’s presence and used to direct the crowd’s bow.
ALSO GROWS
exestin: A verb expressing what is allowed or possible.
ἔξεστιν
Its relation to exousia preserves the sense of permission or right within the idea of authority.
exousiazō: To exercise authority or have control over.
ἐξουσιάζω
This related verb makes the act of wielding authority explicit, as the second beast does here.
THE PATTERN
A demanded bow makes allegiance public and identifies the power receiving it.
And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,THE THREAD
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.Matthew uses the same Greek verb, προσκυνέω (proskyneō), meaning to bow down or pay homage, as Revelation uses for the act directed toward the beast. The shared word reveals the question beneath the scene: who receives the bow? Jesus names the Lord God alone.
