What Does Revelation 16:12 Mean in the King James?
And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The river dries so kings can advance, making this an opened way toward battle rather than an image of rescue.
THE MEANING
The Euphrates loses its water so the kings from the sunrise have a prepared route; the opening belongs to the judgment unfolding in the vision. The next lines name their gathering for battle, so a cleared way carries danger as readily as release.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
An opened route does not by itself mean freedom or rescue; this route prepares kings for battle.
THE ROOT
ἐξηράνθη
exēranthē
GROWS FROM
ξηρ-
xēr-
Dry; the verb ξηραίνω means to dry up or wither.
“dried up” in this verse is exēranthē. The route appears through drying, not through the river being bridged or crossed. The same verb describes plants withering, so the opening comes through water’s disappearance.
ALSO GROWS
xēros: Dry, parched
ξηρός
This adjective names the dry state produced when the river’s water disappears.
xērainō: Dry up, wither
ξηραίνω
In Matthew 13:6 this verb describes seedlings withering in the sun; the same drying can expose a route and mark a loss of life.
ἑτοιμασθῇ
hetoimasthē
GROWS FROM
ἑτοιμαζ- (hetoimaz-), from ἕτοιμος (hetoimos)
Ready; ἑτοιμάζω means to make ready or prepare.
“prepared” in this verse is hetoimasthē. The passive form says the way is made ready without naming its preparer. The verse names the travelers, the kings from the sunrise, so the preparation is defined by who can pass.
ALSO GROWS
hetoimos: Ready
ἕτοιμος
The related adjective describes a state of readiness; here the route itself is made ready for particular travelers.
hetoimasia: Readiness, preparation
ἑτοιμασία
This noun appears in Ephesians 6:15 as “the preparation” of the gospel of peace, showing the same family can name what has been made ready.
ἀνατολῆς ἡλίου
anatolēs hēliou
GROWS FROM
ἀνατέλλω
anatellō
To rise or come up; ἀνατολή names a rising, especially sunrise, and thus the east.
“the east” in this verse is anatolēs hēliou. Greek names the direction through motion: the kings come from the sun’s rising, while English condenses that into “east.” The verse locates their arrival at the horizon and shows what the prepared road lets them do.
ALSO GROWS
anatellō: Rise, come up
ἀνατέλλω
The verb keeps the sense of emergence present in the phrase “from the rising of the sun.”
anatolē: Rising, sunrise; east
ἀνατολή
The noun shifts from the rising itself to its direction, naming where the kings come from.
THE PATTERN
When a barrier is removed to make a way, the named traveler shows what that way serves.
And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.THE THREAD
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.Matthew uses the same Greek verb, ἑτοιμάζω (hetoimazō), for making the Lord’s way ready. Revelation uses it for a way ready for eastern kings: “prepared” names the route’s readiness, while the named traveler shows whose passage it serves.
