What Does Revelation 16:3 Mean in the King James?
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

THE KEY
The sea does not merely look dead: every psyche, every living self within it, dies.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now through a stark image: the sea becomes blood like a corpse, and every living soul in it dies. The water that holds life becomes its field of death, and nothing alive in it escapes.
THE ROOT
ψυχή
psychē
GROWS FROM
ψυχ-
psych-
life, soul; the living self
“living soul” in this verse is psychē. Here psyche means the living self, not a detachable inner substance. The same Greek word is rendered “life” in Revelation 8:9, showing what English keeps apart: soul and life are one word here.
ALSO GROWS
psychikos: natural, belonging to the soul or life
ψυχικός
This branch shows the word family can describe a whole mode of life, not only an unseen inner part.
apsychos: lifeless, inanimate
ἄψυχος
The same root marks the absence of life, sharpening the force of “every living soul died.”
ἀπέθανεν
apethanen
GROWS FROM
θαν-/θν- (than-/thn-)
to die; death
“died” in this verse is apethanen. The verb makes the outcome complete: every living self in the sea dies. Its word family also names the dead and the mortal, so the verse ends in death itself, not merely in a change of appearance.
ALSO GROWS
thanatos: death
θάνατος
The noun names directly what the verse’s final verb declares.
thnētos: mortal, subject to death
θνητός
This branch places the verse’s dying within the language of mortality.
THE PATTERN
When waters become blood, the creatures whose life depends on them die.
And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.THE THREAD
And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. The Greek word rendered “life” here is ψυχή (psychē), the same word translated “living soul” in Revelation 16:3. The root links the two lines: the creatures have psyche, and every psyche in the sea dies.
