And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

THE KEY
The eighth is a new count with an old source: what returns still carries the pattern it came from.
THE MEANING
The force in this verse once was, then was not, yet it is the eighth and still comes from the seven. Its new appearance does not erase its source. Its path leads into perishing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A thing’s return can look like a new beginning; this verse exposes its continuity with what came before.
THE ROOT
ἀπώλεια
apōleia
GROWS FROM
ὄλλυμι
ollymi
To destroy or perish; in this word family, loss and perishing.
“Perdition” names a destination, while its root also speaks of perishing and being lost. The beast goes into the very loss the word carries within it.
ALSO GROWS
apollymi: Perish; lose the way.
ἀπόλλυμι
This verb is in the same word family as “perdition,” making the beast’s end a movement into perishing.
apolōlos: Lost; having perished.
ἀπολωλός
This form appears in the parable of the son who was lost and found, showing the word family can name the state of being lost.
THE PATTERN
What seems absent can return in a form that reveals its continuity with what came before.
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.THE THREAD
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The verb translated “perish” belongs to the same word family as the noun translated “perdition” here. The shared root makes the beast’s end sound like entering the very loss the verb names.
