This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

These rulers are called kings before they possess a kingdom, because what they receive is authority with a limit: one hour beside the beast.

The verse presents authority as received, not self-originating: these rulers have no kingdom yet, but act as kings beside the beast for a bounded hour. Their royal title is real, while their rule remains temporary and dependent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A royal title proves that its holder owns lasting, independent dominion.

ἐξουσίαν

exousian

GROWS FROM

ἐξουσι-

exousi-

authority, permission, or the right to act

“power” in this verse is exousian. The Greek word here names authority or the right to act, not simply strength. That authority is received, so the verse depicts rulers acting under a grant rather than establishing an independent kingdom.

ALSO GROWS

exousiazō: exercise authority over

ἐξουσιάζω

This verb shows the authority word in action; here the kings exercise rule only for the span granted to them.

katexousiazō: exercise authority over, dominate

κατεξουσιάζω

This related form makes the force of authority visible: the kings receive the capacity to rule alongside the beast, but not a lasting realm of their own.

βασιλείαν

basileian

GROWS FROM

βασιλευ-

basileu-

kingship, royal rule

The shared word family connects a king, the act of reigning, and kingship, but the verse names the kings before the kingdom is theirs. Royal status and settled dominion can come apart.

ALSO GROWS

basileus: king

βασιλεύς

The verse calls them kings while saying they have received no kingdom yet, separating the title from possession of a realm.

basileuō: reign, rule as king

βασιλεύω

This names kingship in action and sharpens the distinction between being called kings and holding lasting dominion.

Authority can be granted and real while its reach and duration remain bounded.

As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
Daniel 7:12 · KJVEven beastly dominion is taken away while a measured span remains, showing that rule carries an endpoint.
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
John 19:11 · KJVAuthority over Jesus is real yet received, not self-originating; the grant sets its boundary.
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:18 · KJVThe verse names authority as given, showing that a grant can carry full reach without making authority self-originating.
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
Revelation 13:5 · KJV

The same Greek authority word appears here and in Revelation 17:12. In both verses the beast receives authority for a stated span, making the hour part of a recurring pattern of granted, limited rule.
