What Does Revelation 2:23 Mean in the King James?
And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The “reins” are kidneys: the verse makes judgment a search of the body’s hidden interior as well as a reckoning of each person’s works.
THE MEANING
Her children face death; the verse states this violence without softening it. Every assembly comes to recognize the speaker as the one who searches the kidneys and heart, and each person receives according to their works. The verse binds inward scrutiny to outward consequence, with death left fully in view.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that concealed motives escape judgment does not hold here: the verse names both the hidden inward parts and each person’s works.
THE ROOT
ἐραυνῶν
ereunōn
GROWS FROM
ἐραυν-
ereun-
To search out or examine closely.
“searcheth” in this verse is ereunōn. The same verb describes searching Scripture and the breath searching all things, so it means deliberate examination that reaches beneath what is immediately seen. Here it names scrutiny of the inward parts, not a passing glance.
ALSO GROWS
ereunate: You search; the form is used for searching the Scriptures in John 5:39.
ἐραυνᾶτε
It shows the verb describing a sustained examination, the kind of scrutiny the verse applies to the hidden interior.
ereuna: Searches; in 1 Corinthians 2:10, it describes the breath searching all things.
ἐραυνᾷ
This use carries the same verb from searching texts to searching what lies beneath them.
νεφρούς
nephrous
GROWS FROM
νεφρ-
nephr-
Kidney; the bodily organ named directly by the Greek word.
The Greek names kidneys, preserving a bodily image that the English word “reins” can obscure. Paired with hearts, the kidneys place the hidden inward person within the scope of the search.
ALSO GROWS
nephros: Kidney, singular; the concrete organ named by the root.
νεφρός
It shows that “reins” carries an anatomical meaning, not only an abstract idea of inward thought.
nephroi: Kidneys, plural; the same noun appears beside hearts in Psalm 7:9.
νεφροί
The paired organs keep the image of inward scrutiny concrete and bodily.
ἔργα
erga
GROWS FROM
ἐργ-
erg-
Work or deed; what is done.
“works” in this verse is erga. The word gathers actual deeds and activity, not an invisible measure detached from life. Beside the searched inward parts, it holds concealed interior and outward conduct together.
ALSO GROWS
ergon: Work, deed, or act in the singular.
ἔργον
It makes each person’s works concrete: actions and deeds that can be named.
ergazomai: To work, do, or carry out an action.
ἐργάζομαι
The related verb shows the same root as activity taking shape in what a person does.
THE PATTERN
Divine judgment reaches the hidden interior and outward acts together, then gives each person according to their conduct.
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.Who will render to every man according to his deeds:THE THREAD
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.Jeremiah binds the search of heart and reins to giving each person according to their ways and deeds. Revelation carries the same architecture and makes the consequence explicit, including the death it names.
