What Does Revelation 20:8 Mean in the King James?
And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Here deception does not leave the nations scattered: it leads them off course and gathers them into one battle.
THE MEANING
Deception can pull many people off course and turn their movement into a shared march toward violence. Their number is like the sand of the sea, yet the verse still names their gathering as the fruit of deception. Gog and Magog identify the battle-bound multitude in the verse.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A multitude’s size and unity do not prove that its cause is true; this verse describes a vast, united gathering as deceived.
THE ROOT
πλανῆσαι
planēsai
GROWS FROM
πλανάω
planaō
To cause to wander or lead astray.
“deceive” in this verse is planēsai. The Greek verb carries the sense of moving someone off course, beyond simply telling a falsehood. Here, that wandering ends in a shared destination: the nations are gathered for battle.
ALSO GROWS
planē: Wandering, error, or delusion.
πλάνη
This branch shows deception as a departure from the right course.
planētēs: Wanderer; a wandering heavenly body.
πλανήτης
The familiar word planet comes from this branch, preserving the image of wandering within the same word family.
συναγαγεῖν
synagagein
GROWS FROM
ἄγω (agō), in συνάγω (synagō)
Ἄγω (agō) means to lead or bring; σύν (syn) means together, so συνάγω (synagō) means to bring together.
“gather them together” in this verse is synagagein. The verse places being led astray beside being brought together. The people’s shared direction does not undo their deception; the deception itself gathers them into a common course.
ALSO GROWS
synagōgē: A gathering or assembly.
συναγωγή
The word-family extends from bringing people together to the assembly formed by that gathering.
agōgē: Leading, conduct, or manner of life.
ἀγωγή
This branch keeps the root’s sense of leading visible beneath the act of gathering.
THE PATTERN
Deception can lead people into a shared course that ends in conflict.
And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.THE THREAD
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.The word translated deceiveth here comes from the same Greek root, πλανάω (planaō), meaning to lead astray or cause to wander. Revelation 20:8 shows that same deception drawing the nations into a united movement toward battle.
