What Does Revelation 22:16 Mean in the King James?
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

THE KEY
Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, Yeshua, “deliverance”) is both the root and descendant of David (דָּוִד, Dawid, “beloved”), the source and flowering of the same line shining as dawn.
THE MEANING
Yeshua speaks as both the source of David’s line and its living descendant; its root and its emergence are held together in him. The bright morning star marks the arrival of dawn. The message comes to you through a messenger, as testimony for the assemblies.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that a source and its descendant must be separate figures: the verse holds both in one.
THE ROOT
ῥίζα
rhiza
GROWS FROM
ῥιζ-
rhiz-
Root: the source from which growth draws life.
“root” in this verse is rhiza. The Greek word names the living source beneath what grows from it. Paired with “offspring,” it makes the source and the visible line part of one living continuity.
ALSO GROWS
rhizoō: to root or establish
ῥιζόω
The same word family describes a life made firm by being rooted.
errizōmenoi: having been rooted
ἐρριζωμένοι
This form shows what the root produces: something that grows while remaining grounded in its source.
γένος
genos
GROWS FROM
γεν-
gen-
Be born or come into being; a family stock or lineage.
“Offspring” can name both birth and the line that continues through it. Beside “root,” it holds origin and emergence together: David’s line draws from its source and appears as its growth.
ALSO GROWS
genesis: birth, origin, or coming into being
γένεσις
The word makes the emergence of the line visible as a beginning.
genea: generation or lineage
γενεά
This branch carries the sense of a family line continuing through successive generations.
יֵשׁוּעַ
Yeshua
GROWS FROM
ישׁע
y-sh-ʿ
Deliver; bring out from constriction into spaciousness.
“Jesus” in this verse is Yeshua. The name carries deliverance as nature, not merely as a title. The one who bears it is named here as both the root and the living emergence of David’s line.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: to deliver
יָשַׁע
This verb is the action held within the name Yeshua.
yeshuah: deliverance
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun names the nature carried by the speaker’s name.
THE PATTERN
The promised Davidic life is both the hidden root of the line and its visible growth.
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.THE THREAD
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. This verse names him “the Root of David” and joins that identity to the one who opens the sealed book. The root is more than ancestry: it is the living source with power to bring what is closed into view.
