King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The crown is already yours to keep, and “hold fast” names an active grip that protects it from being taken.
THE MEANING
You already possess what the verse tells you to hold, and the crown is tied to that present keeping. The promise of his coming presses urgency into the present because what you have can be taken.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that a promised crown is impossible to lose: the verse warns that it can be taken.
THE ROOT
κράτει
kratei
GROWS FROM
κρατ- (krat-), from κράτος (kratos)
Strength, might, or power; as a verb, to take hold firmly, master, or prevail.
“hold fast” in this verse is kratei. The Greek verb κρατέω carries the force of a firm grip, not passive waiting. The verse locates the crown’s vulnerability in what is held now.
ALSO GROWS
kratos: strength, might, power
κράτος
The shared stem gives “hold fast” the sense of holding with strength.
krataios: strong, mighty
κραταιός
This related form echoes the strength implied by the command to keep hold.
στέφανόν
stephanon
GROWS FROM
στέφ- (steph-), from στέφω (stephō)
To encircle or crown with a wreath.
The word is στέφανος, a wreath-crown associated with honor or victory. The image is of a crown already in your keeping, not one the verse tells you to manufacture.
ALSO GROWS
stephō: to encircle, crown
στέφω
This verb gives the crown its wreath-like image.
stephanoō: to crown, encircle with a crown
στεφανόω
The related verb makes clear that the crown is something conferred and then kept.
THE PATTERN
What is entrusted in the present is preserved through sustained holding.
But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.THE THREAD
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.Hebrews uses the same Greek verb, κρατέω, for holding fast. There the held thing is a confession; here, it is what you have and the crown bound to it.
