What Does Romans 11:10 Mean in the King James?
Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

THE KEY
Judgment appears as a paired constriction: sight is darkened, and the back is kept bent.
THE MEANING
This line names a condition in which seeing is withheld and the body remains bent without relief. Its force is severe: darkness reaches the eyes, while the continually bowed back makes the burden visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that not seeing is only an inward limitation: here, obscured sight and a body kept bent are joined.
THE ROOT
σκοτισθήτωσαν
skotisthētōsan
GROWS FROM
σκοτ-
skot-
darkness, obscurity
“darkened” in this verse is skotisthētōsan. The Greek verb carries the word for darkness inside it: the eyes are acted upon by obscurity, not merely closed. The same root links this line to other passages where darkness reaches the heart or mind.
ALSO GROWS
skotos: darkness
σκότος
The noun names the condition contained in “darkened”: sight is placed under darkness.
skotia: darkness, gloom
σκοτία
This related form shows the same root describing an encompassing state of obscurity, not just a momentary failure to look.
skoteinos: dark, belonging to darkness
σκοτεινός
The adjective carries the root into what is marked by darkness, deepening the verse’s image of sight overtaken by it.
THE PATTERN
Obscured sight marks a larger condition of constriction, while opened sight is paired with lifting.
We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.THE THREAD
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. The same Greek root for “darkened,” σκοτ- (skot-), appears in both verses: here darkness reaches the eyes, and there it reaches the heart. Romans 11:10 adds the bent back, making the obscuring visible in the body as well.
