What Does Romans 6:19 Mean in the King James?

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Greek repeats the same verb for the former and present yielding: the members stay the same while the direction of their service turns.

The same embodied capacities that have served uncleanness and life outside instruction now serve alignment, carrying you toward being set apart. The members remain the same while their service changes direction. What once extended uncleanness and lawlessness now extends toward alignment and set-apartness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the lie that once your body has served uncleanness, it can only keep serving it; the verse says, “even so now,” and redirects those same members.

παρεστήσατε

parestēsate

GROWS FROM

⁨παρίστημι⁩ (paristēmi), from ⁨παρά⁩ (para, beside) + ⁨ἵστημι⁩ (histēmi, stand or set)

To stand beside, present, or place at someone’s disposal.

“yielded / yield” in this verse is parestēsate. The same verb appears in both halves: first describing what the members served, then naming what they serve now. The members do not become different; what changes is who receives their service and where it leads.

ALSO GROWS

parestēsate: You presented or placed at someone’s disposal.

παρεστήσατε

This is the past form describing the members’ former service.

parastēsate: Present or place at someone’s disposal.

παραστήσατε

This is the present command; the same act of presenting is redirected.

parastēsai: To present.

παραστῆσαι

Romans 12:1 uses this same verb family for presenting the body.

ἀνομίᾳ

anomíā

GROWS FROM

⁨νόμος⁩ (nomos), with privative ⁨ἀ-⁩ (a-)

Instruction; ⁨ἀνομία⁩ names what is without or against instruction.

The English word “iniquity” hides the word’s construction: a- with nomos, instruction. “Unto iniquity” describes a direction that carries further away from instruction, and the verse sets that movement beside a new direction toward alignment.

ALSO GROWS

nomos: Instruction.

νόμος

This is the root whose absence or rejection is carried by anomia.

anomos: Without instruction; lawless.

ἄνομος

It shares the same negative prefix and root, making the shape of iniquity visible.

anomia: Lawlessness; life outside instruction.

ἀνομία

The verse repeats this word as the direction the former service extends toward.

δικαιοσύνῃ

dikaiosynē

GROWS FROM

⁨δικ-⁩ (dik-) word family, including ⁨δίκη⁩ (dikē, right or justice)

Right relation or alignment.

Righteousness names the new direction of service as alignment. The verse presents it as something the members serve, with that service leading onward into being set apart.

ALSO GROWS

dikaios: Right; aligned.

δίκαιος

This related word describes the state toward which the service is directed.

dikaioō: Set right; align.

δικαιόω

This verb from the same family makes the movement toward right relation visible.

A person’s embodied capacities take the direction of the service they are given.

Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.
Psalm 119:37 · KJVThe eyes are turned from vanity toward a life-giving way, showing a bodily capacity redirected toward a new path.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Romans 12:1 · KJVThe body itself is presented in service, echoing the claim that the members take direction through what they serve.
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:19 · KJVThe body belongs within the verse’s account of service; its capacities are part of the life being directed.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Romans 12:1 · KJV

The Greek “present” (⁨παραστῆσαι⁩, parastēsai) belongs to the same verb family as “yield” in Romans 6:19. Romans 12:1 names the body itself as what is presented, making the earlier image of members in service bodily and concrete.
