What Does Romans 6:20 Mean in the King James?
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The freedom described here is already owned by another master: being free from alignment means being bound to missing.
THE MEANING
When missing governs you, you are free from alignment; nothing binds your choices to what is right. Yet this freedom is not open ground, because the same sentence names the allegiance that holds you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that being free from righteousness means being free, full stop: a person can be free from alignment while still bound to sin.
THE ROOT
ἁμαρτίας
hamartias
GROWS FROM
ἁμαρτ-
hamart-
Missing; failing to hit or attain.
“sin” in this verse is hamartias. The word carries the sense of missing, but here that missing becomes a master. The verse’s paradox is that life organized around missing can feel free from alignment.
ALSO GROWS
hamartanō: To miss or go wrong.
ἁμαρτάνω
It shows the action beneath sin: missing what one is aiming for.
hamartōlos: A person characterized as missing or erring.
ἁμαρτωλός
It shows how a repeated pattern of missing can become an identity and, in this verse, a ruling allegiance.
δοῦλοι
douloi
GROWS FROM
δουλ-
doul-
Bondage or enslavement; service under a master.
Servants here means people under a master’s authority, not simply people who help. That makes clear that being free from alignment does not mean being masterless: the verse already names who holds the person.
ALSO GROWS
douleuō: To be in service under another’s authority.
δουλεύω
It makes the verse’s language of service a condition of being ruled, not a passing choice.
douleia: The state of being enslaved.
δουλεία
It reveals the captivity hidden inside the apparent freedom from alignment.
δικαιοσύνης
dikaiosynēs
GROWS FROM
δικ-
dik-
What is right or just; right relation and alignment.
Righteousness carries the sense of alignment with what is right. The verse places that alignment on one side of a boundary and the service of missing on the other, showing that freedom always has a relation to what governs it.
ALSO GROWS
dikaios: One who is in the right or aligned with what is right.
δίκαιος
It shows righteousness as a quality of alignment, not merely a label.
dikaioō: To declare or make right.
δικαιόω
It shows the same word family reaching toward the act of bringing something into alignment.
THE PATTERN
Scripture measures freedom by what governs a life and where its service goes.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.THE THREAD
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. This verse reverses the two halves of Romans 6:20: freedom from missing becomes service to alignment. Together they show freedom as a change in what rules you.
