What Does Romans 9:7 Mean in the King James?
Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Even Abraham’s name, אַבְרָהָם (Avraham, “father of a multitude”), does not make every descendant a child; the promise names its line through Isaac, יִצְחָק (Yitzḥaq, “he laughs”).
THE MEANING
The verse keeps ancestry and belonging distinct: being Abraham’s seed does not automatically make someone his child. The promised line is called through Isaac, so descent alone is not the measure of who belongs.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie it dissolves is that inherited closeness to Abraham guarantees belonging automatically.
THE ROOT
σπέρμα
sperma
GROWS FROM
σπειρ-
speir-
to sow, scatter seed
The Greek word for seed belongs to the family of sowing, so it carries the sense of what is planted and what grows from it. The Genesis line quoted here uses זֶרַע (zeraʿ, seed or offspring), from זרע (z-r-ʿ), the root for sowing; both languages keep seed linked to what is carried forward.
ALSO GROWS
speirō: to sow
σπείρω
The verb names the action related to the seed noun, keeping an origin in view when the verse speaks of offspring.
spora: sowing; seed
σπορά
This related word holds the act of sowing and its seed within the same word-family, echoing the verse’s movement from descent toward a continuing line.
κληθήσεται
klēthēsetai
GROWS FROM
καλε-/κλη- (kale-/klē-)
to call, summon, name
“Called” makes the line a designation, not simply a conclusion drawn from ancestry. The promise names where Abraham’s seed is recognized as his children.
ALSO GROWS
klēsis: calling; invitation
κλῆσις
The related noun shows the family’s link between a call and the identity or place given through it.
klētos: called; invited
κλητός
This related form describes someone identified by a call, fitting the verse’s emphasis on the line that is called through Isaac.
יִצְחָק
Yitzḥaq
GROWS FROM
צחק
ṣ-ḥ-q
to laugh
Isaac’s Hebrew name carries laughter inside the promise line. That name-nature sits beside the verse’s boundary: the seed is called through Isaac, rather than every descendant automatically being counted as a child.
ALSO GROWS
ṣāḥaq: to laugh
צָחַק
This verb is the action carried in Isaac’s name, placing laughter within the identity of the promised son.
tseḥoq: laughter
צְחוֹק
This noun makes the name’s laughter audible as a thing in its own right, adding a layer to the line identified through Isaac.
THE PATTERN
Promise, rather than descent alone, identifies the line of belonging.
And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.THE THREAD
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.Galatians 3:16 uses the same word for “seed” and contrasts many seeds with one. It opens Romans 9:7 further by showing how the promise identifies a particular line within the larger field of Abraham’s descendants.
